Just for the sake of discussion. I came across this new bike manufacturer called Fortified which guarantees a theft proof bike:

I imagine that the bike is NOT inexpensive since they promise to ship you a new bike within 24 hours.

I think this is a very interesting concept, especially if they follow through on their promises. They certainly took a different path to differentiate themselves.

It looks like a fairly average bike. The theft guarantee sounds interesting. I wonder if it is like the U-Lock guarantees, worded in a way to limit their own liability.

That's my impression as well. They're making noise about the "waterproof saddle" and "puncture resistant tires" when these are basic features that virtually all hybrid bikes have. The U-Lock is... just a U-Lock, with the same pros and cons that all U-Locks have. The "anti-theft guarentee" is by far the most interesting thing about it.

It sounds like they are expecting you to register the bikes, as well as registering any future sales of the bike. That will be ok for the first 5 years or so that it is on the market, but after that, I doubt people will keep up the registrations.

Is it unique enough that a thief couldn't just sand off the logos and spray paint it black like they do with just about anything else? Still, having a registered serial number should help with future tracking it down. How many bike owners never have adequate info to report a stolen bike? It certainly is hard to match a used bike with stolen bike registries if they aren't registered.

It does seem a bit odd that Fortified seems to be a bit sparse on details, but perhaps this is all still in development. I would have to think that they would at least require some effort to lock & care for the bike to get a free replacement. Also, for how long? Or should one expect that the company will get buried in claims within the first decade, and just quietly go away?

I find that I'm often paying a premium when I seek out non-waterproof saddles and tires that lack puncture-protection layers!

I'm not sure I would trust a company that can't Photoshop their bike properly on the website's cover page.

i saw the ads for it while browsing the internet and IMO it is just a gimmick bike. nothing really special about it. I personally would not buy one. I have a bike lock and havent ever had a problem with theft except a time where I openly left a bike in my front yard and someone walked away with it.

also the hardware ,on the wheels just adds another tool you have to carry around if you get a flat tire. if you dont have it, you are walking home. no thanks man
