The Annual "What Am I Gonna Do Until Fair Weather Comes Around Again" Thread

Y'see? Some of you thought my "Put My Bike Away For Winter" thread was old hat, but now it has spawned two additional threads and some good discussion.

This particular thread is for those of us who DO put the bike away for winter. I've started it because I am hoping to find something better (bicycle-related) to do over the winter than hanging out in these forums posting useless responses and asking tired old questions just to pass the time. I do write local history books and articles and I enjoy adding new songs to my ukulele repertoire, but there always seems to be down-time - time that I am daydreaming about cycling.

Can anybody suggest some bicycle-related winter activity that I haven't thought of yet?

For us, it is "What Am I Gonna Do Until the Smoke Dissipates?" and "Is this Our Future?"

As for the topic: Cross-country skiing is an almost ideal winter complement to bicycling.

wgscott: I am watching those fires with sadness, as always. I have been right smack in the middle of them while on business and it was some scary stuff, but I know it's a whole different story when you have property and life to lose.

May the winds be with you and may it rain like heck soon.

Get a fat bike. On my way in to work this morning I stopped off with my dog to ride in the woods for an hour. When I bought a fat bike back in 2014 I sold my trainer. Haven't looked back.

I like to hike. Yesterday my wife and friend and I took a short trail hike in Fahnestock State Park, NY. It's a good idea to get as much sunlight as possible during the dark months.

I like walking, too. However, it's dark by the time I get home during the winter and the cars fly through my neighborhood, drivers eyes fixed on their smart phones. Also, all the stores in town have gone out of business. I used to walk the whole retail strip and stop in to visit all the store owners that I knew from the Chamber of Commerce. Now there's just a Dunkin Donuts and a smoke shop open at night, and nobody inside speaks English.

As far as actual "hiking," I have a bad back, so climbing up and down hills wearing a backpack is not going to cut it for me.

Is that enough excuses for now?
