This is for motorcycle helmets but you can obviously use it for a bike helmet. It's a foam. Smells really good. I don't need it for my bike helmet because I always wear my cotton cap underneath.

A dunk in a tub of very mild detergent every 7 years does wonders for keeping it fresh.

Ignoring for the moment that this is a zombie thread that someone woke...
Helmets are generally considered expired (foam breaks down) after about 5 years or so.

I didn't realise people actually washed their helmets. Every day's a school day!

Never washed a helmet per se, though I'm intrigued by the easy idea of top-rack of dishwasher.

I always wear a Pace skull cap (or equivalent). It gets rinsed in the shower after every ride, tossed in the laundry after several. I have several pairs. They radically reduce helmet odors and make it far nicer to put on.
Mine don't either. No nostrils, no smell sensors.
I fill my bathroom sink with hot water, add a little laundry soap, push the helmet down to get it good and wet, flip it over so the straps are completely immersed and leave it for a while. Come back, rinse it out. squeeze out the last of the soapy water in the pads and straps, rinse again, repeat and hang to dry, Pretty simple. I've been doing this for decades. Doesn't seem to faze them at all.
And yes, I know these are ancient posts. But some issues simply don't go away.

But hey, it's your helmet. Go for it if you think it's a good idea

Lots of settings on dishwashers though. I can completely turn off the extra heat (water heating and dryer). That article seemed to indicate that no helmet lost any protective abillity, but they seemed upset that the labels inside the helmets fell off.

Good article. Food for thought.

I certainly wouldn't use dishwasher detergent. It is pretty harsh, even on dishes/glasses!

I spray my helmet with the garden hose a few times over the summer. Sounds like this is akin to chain lube, you can make it as complicated and time consuming as you like.

I have two helmets I rotate. I just rinse my helmet out after each ride and hang them to dry overnight. I used to let them get all cruddy and smelly, but got tired of it after a while. One of those things that, after I started doing it, I couldn't believe I didn't think of it earlier. No smell, the pads don't rot out, and the straps don't crust over with sweat.
