welcome back! riding on monday and would like to come up into the de luz/fallbrook/temecula/murrieta area on (actually have a saturday available!) saturday but storm(s) supposed to do some decent storm stuff late tues-early sat.
may end up having to just do the torrey pines-oceanside ride and back along the coast that day but have really been wanting to hit south grade road (between ca hwy 74 southbound to los gatos road) between lake elsinore and
de luz.

Sun. morning had a nice ride up in the Brea/D Bar hills. A bit chilly when I left my house a bit after 7 but it soon warmed to pleasant riding temps so layering was key. Up Brea Cyn. Rd. to SAG at Heritage Park. Over to D Bar Blve up & around to Golden Springs.. Down to Brea Cyn. Cutoff. I was unaware of the resurfacing work on Golden Springs adjacent to the 60 but it looks to be almost done so be advised. Sidewalked the last stretch of raw graded substrate for a few hundred yards a minor inconvenience. Added bonus: down the hill on Brea Cyn Cutoff from Pathfinder hit all green lights down the hill & under the 57 no braking required yay me! (exceeded the posted 35 mph speed limit a tad but oh well...) Back down Brea Cyn Road to home. Save a group of a dozen or so heading east on Malvern through Fullerton only saw 2 other cyclists the entire ride.

I usually don't like leaving too late in the morning when I plan on riding PCH. The wind can kick up and really ruin a nice ride. Sunday was just so warm and nice I talked myself into riding down to the Huntington Beach Pier (28 miles in all). What a great day! Warm with very little wind. And what wind there was was just a slight side wind.

Right on as Doffo winery has one of the moto's starting at Ebenton road.
I like to pit stop at Doffo and enjoy the scenery.

Saturday...Gravel Bike California group ride, starting at Maverick Cycles in Whittier. The route included dirt in Turnbull Canyon, Schabarum Park, and Powder Canyon. Turnbull was familiar to me, but the rest was all new, and quite enjoyable...until my chain broke...and broke again...and broke again. I'm usually pretty good with a chain tool, but things just didn't want to cooperate. I managed to get back to the starting point, but the last 5-ish miles were on my own and not on the same route as the group. https://www.strava.com/activities/10391318938



Sunday...Coffee ride. Legs felt a bit empty from Saturday's efforts, and didn't have the gas to stick with the fast guys when things got spicy, so I took the shorter route through Monrovia with the not-fast guys and kept my effort at a mid-level tempo, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. https://www.strava.com/activities/10396472111

I’m planning a ride from Temple City to San Clemente train to San Diego then ride to Carlsbad in Feb/Mar. 100 miles ish. anyone interested in helping me train or even ride that way let me know. Saturdays are my training days.

I expect that the golf course has an agreement with the City of Pasadena regarding guaranteed access, with exceptions for Rose Bowl events.

Bummer on the chain. I recently had issues with my chain as the quick link somehow got loose, not suppose to happen after set and hundreds of miles of good riding. Got it reset after 2 stops and made the rest of the ride home. Should probably replace as I dont want that happening again.

Yesterday got a double dose of Ti pleasure, Ti morning road ride and Ti afternoon dirt ride.
One nice Ti gravel bike would do both but not as well as dedicated road and old school hard tail, especially on sandy thick bumpy trails.
I always have Mt Palomar teasing me in the background of my Temecula foot hill trails.
Also interesting all the diff kind of ranches, mostly horse but also one where the buffalo roam.

lumpy coastal ride. Mission Bay to Point Loma, Cabillo park was still closed, headed over to Soledad via Nautilus side, up Del Mar Heights from 101 (good 13%), up 3 witches and limped back through some more hills in Mira Mesa to UCSD and drop back into Mission Bay trails. https://www.strava.com/activities/10391419972 Coffee at birdrock right before Soledad wasn't the smartest move of the day. Great weather, huge temp swing though 44* to 78*

My backyard. I've hiked those trails hundreds of times long before it was Otterbein Park and the Puente Hills Habitat going back to the 1970's.
It was ranchland at that time and barbwire fencing everywhere that has since been mostly removed.
Never thought much about riding there because it is heavily used by hikers, equestrians, runners and dog walkers.
What was your experience like WRT to the aforementioned?

More gravel and dirt for me today and also visited some of my ranch friends including horses and llamas.
Road the Surly gravel bike which was great for this mixed terrain day of 40 miles and 3+ hours.

Temple City to Turnbull Canyon and back. Haven’t done TBC for. While it was nice and empty today. Had to use brakes on decent a lot due to the dirt/debris from recent rain tho

Merry Christmas everyone! Last week I was mostly sick and bed ridden. I think I caught a nasty flu. I tested negative for COVID, but whatever I caught was even worst! It was like a hangover, with a fever plus major cold sweats, while my head was spinning on a high speed merry-go-round! The worst!

Anyways, I finally was able to ride on Sunday and eased my way back on the bike doing 26 miles and 4 laps around the Rose Bowl.

I’ve done the Turnbull Canyon climb and 7th Street loop on my MTB before. Nothing is significantly technical, but there was a spot I had to walk on the singletrack climb back up to the top of Turnbull. That area is okay, but not interesting enough to bring me back very soon.

The climb out of Schabarum Park was really enjoyable, and I will find a time to ride there again. Powder Canyon was very nice, too, despite a very steep section of the climb to the top of the hill. I really liked the change of scenery from my typical riding areas. It seems like there is still a lot for me to explore in the future.

Friday…Quick travel ride in my local hills (Brown Saddle and Lower Sunset) on damp trails. Traction was spectacular. (12mi)


Saturday…Montrose Ride (7:45 short). Pace on the flats was quite mellow, and kind of uninspired. I put in a hard effort on the Winston climb, and at the finish into Sierra Madre. My power felt pretty good, and is showing signs of improvement. (53mi)


Sunday…MTB ride to the top of Brown Mtn Rd. Legs were tired and my pace was pretty slow, but it was a very fun ride in “hero dirt” conditions. (15mi)

I haven't been able to ride much the last two weeks, mainly because my kids are home for winter break (seriously 3 weeks of vacation). Today I was able to knock out 32 miles and 2200 feet of climbing over at Griffith Park. Definitely gravel bike weather for me, because my gravel shoes are water resistant and my gravel bike is better suited for water hose downs after a gritty ride. I saw quite a few cyclists bust out their Ass Saver fenders. Definitely handy for rainy days!

That’s a big ass saver lol. I have the small one that slips into the saddle. I still get wet and grit on my back but stops it from getting in my crack.

I have both the gravel and road version of the Ass Saver Win Wing. It's their newest version which actually works quite well.

Plus the only reason I don't like taking my road bike on wet days is having to deal with all the grit that builds up after a wet/muddy ride. My gravel build is has less fragile components for all weather conditions.
