Low flange hub with 36 holes, holes too close to eachother?

Low flange hub, 36 holes.

I got to wondering about the hole-to-hole distance and potential weak points there.

Is this anything to worry about or not?

Quite normal. Tangential pull isn't as stressful as radial. Lace them 3-cross.

Or 4X. I got 17,000 miles out a pair until I wore out the sidewalls completely braking. (Sewups; not dangerous, just a very bumpy ride home!)

That looks to be an exceptionally well made hub to me even though I have no clue what it is. I would lace with confidence.

Yeah, I've seen lots of flange failures, and the only time I think the drill spacing was a problem was with a 48-spoke hub.

I probably would lace them 3x front and rear. However, a few things have changed between vintage hubs and modern hubs.

Vintage Miche (randomly pulled off of the internet).

Hub above:


The new hubs have 1.5x to 2x the flange depth beyond the holes to give a stronger flange.
The deeply countersunk spoke holes also likely indicate a thicker flange, and somewhat of a taper of the flange from the axle side to the outer edge. Again, giving more material around the spoke holes.

Ultimately, with a lot of holes, it still is overall a stronger construction than the vintage hubs.

Of course, some of the strength will also depend on the aluminum alloy, and how the hub was formed. I.E. The big brands likely put more research into strength and fatigue.

Modern decent hubs are cold forged and quite strong.

Out of curiosity, what is it that you see that gives you an indication as to build quality?

Same as what has been posted above, the extra distance from the holes to the edge of the hub, the extra thickness and the countersinking of the flanges, much thicker than the Campy small flange hubs I'm holding in my hands. Plus the polish, dust seals and general fit and finish. Now school me: is that a cartridge bearing and or possibly one of those new fangled thru axle hubs? I'm only used to dealing with really ancient cup and cone hubs. What brand? Because I really have no clue. If it's some crappy BSO hub I'll be embarrassed.

Cartridge bearing. Not sure about the "fangled thru axle" thing.

White Industries M15 hub. If it's as good as everyone says it is then i guess I did good!
