Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CAAD4 had the hourglass stays; CAAD5 was just CAAD4 with an integrated headset.

IMO, the vertical compliance of any normal frame is next to nil, whether hourglass or straight stays... the old cantilevered dropout (2.8 aluminum?) frames seem like a better design for creating springiness - but I've only heard that they are "harsh". (although not in my experience...)

I got a Lemonde Alp d'Huez. It's carbon fork/stays. 105's, Brontrager race/lite components, SPD pedals. I really like it, i think normal price is $1349. That seems to fit into your wants

https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/..._preorders.htm

That seems like an obscene deal with the AC420s on there-That's a 700 dollar wheelset on a 1300 dollar bike. Add in the Ultegra 10 and you get money back plus a frame, etc... I might buy on tommorow depending on how my insurance stuff comes through.

its all about wheels. and good cog and cranks.

I have a 20lb bike it has 105 all around except for the cranks and cogs are el-cheapo. because of this... it cannot change gears nice and quickly.

Its also a good thing to have nice wheels. better to put that weight on the frame than on the wheels.

What didn't you like about the seat stays on your old Cannondale? If its a CAAD4 design or older, you'd have the straight bar ones that caused the "harsh ride" complaint. CAAD5 and up had the hourglass stays that really help.
The CAAD frames don't have carbon, but often have a carbon seatpost, and it's true the hourglass stays are real smooth. That's my vote.

I'm not a wrench so I'm not really considering Motobecane from bd as an option, no matter how good a deal they are. I guess any bike I purchase that I order will have to be put together somewhere... hmm..

And thanks for the Jamis suggestion. The ventura has a sloping top tube but otherwise is great!

As I've said before I don't have access to many bikes for testing. I can get my hands on Fuji easily, and Masi, and for about an hours drive, Felt and a few others. Right now, Fuji and Felt are the front runners.
