LOL that was good. Luckily it has not come to that. There were always people behind me.

Unless you've been promoted out of your league I don't see how it's possible to get shelled so badly as to come in DFL.
Even if you're just getting started, in a Cat 5 field of 50 I think I could still manage to finish at least 10 above DFL even if I sawed off my right crankarm before the race.

+ a big number. would someone stick a fork in this thread already!?!?!
If you're contemplating DFL vs. DNF, you aren't a good enough racer to post on the BF racing subforum, where half the posters won multiple races this year (your's truly not included).

Much respect to the officer who died trying.
And yeah it is very weak of the officials to call a race because of 90 degree heat. I ran plenty of 15+ milers in 100+ Fahrenheit heat and smog. The Africans were probably shivering. The marathon used to be thought of as an extreme test of the human body. It's not that way anymore.

You must be taking the piss. Respect to some fool who died running a marathon in 90F heat? Its called throwing your life away. Thats a Darwin award winner right there.
Kudos to the organisers for calling it off. For the 50 full time pro athletes in the event, yeah, 90F no problemo. But for the 35000 nuffies who at best will only finish the distance and who have no business running 42km in those kind of conditions, they should be grateful IMO.

Ratebeer, on the off chance you weren't attempting sarcasm, you might want to read this. Shorter knows what he's talking about:

A lot of people run marathons for the heck of it. They're often under trained and they drop out at the first sign of adversity. That's fine. The same goes for triathlons. Many aren't racing or even trying for personal bests. They're doing it as a social thing or whatever. That's fine. No one cares if someone's 250 pound grandma dropped out at mile 20 of a mountainous marathon because her shoes were soaked in blood from blisters gone bad. Actually most people would be proud of such a person.
In cycling, sure you have go out and lead another team into over expense for the benefit of your own team, but you should still finish easy.

Those Africans, most being from Kenya or Ethiopia, were most definitely not used to the heat. If you're an elite runner from Kenya, you're most likely from the high altitude region around Eldoret (name of several Nike track spikes, in addition to being a town there).
As far as I can tell, poking around at wunderground.com, the maximum temperature in Eldoret for all of 2006 was 84*F. Most of the time it's in the 60s or 70s.
Also, and this is a generalization that mostly holds true, if you're getting blisters on your feet in a marathon, you shouldn't be there. Sorry, but that's the truth. You simply haven't put in the miles, and shouldn't be running that far.

We had an A rider run the last four miles of XC at regionals because he flatted twice. He finished last, obviously, but he told himself he'd never DNF and he never has. Plus it was the only way to qualify for nationals.

So then, the moral of this thread is:
If you DFL you're an idiot for trying & if you DNF you're a quitter.
OK, good, got it. Next thread please.

in a road race, Make it a training ride. You're not too in the way.
In a crit, if it's hopeless, stop! save your energy for the next race.

well I was doing the mtl to quebec city race and well i was caught up in a crash. I wasn't able to get back on to the main peleton that was going 50+kph. I caught shrapnel from the crash and we rode and didn't say yes to get picked up by the broom wagon. In the end we were only 16minutes away from the leader. way better than a DNF.

I'm actually starting to rethink this. If I get DFL that's because I wussed out and went off the back before I was truly wasted. My new goal will be to hang with the pack until I feel like puking, then hang on some more just in case. If I'm going off the back next year, I want it to be because I couldn't pedal another stroke, and I expect a teammate or spouse to carry me back to my car. From now on, going off the back means I chickened out!
