Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some elitist dweeb dissed my Bianchi

Today I am at my LBS and this 40 something woman grabs my Bianchi Eros (reynolds steel) lifts it and loudly proclaims "how can anyone ride something so heavy"? I wanted to tell her thats what I was going to ask your husband...witch! Stupid me then asked her what she rode..."Fuji, full carbon and it rides like on a cloud and it's odd they still make steel". I said too bad she did'nt get titanium for the $2600. she said she spent. It was all I could do to not tell this wipe that weight was irrelevent with her packing 30 lbs. more than the health chart calls for. Not a person that the makers of Spandex would use for their model. Of course she drove off in her new (no plates yet) Mercedes SUV. Man, I feel sorry for the dude who is married to this queen. LBS guys had a good laugh at her rant. I have had my moments, but would never diss someones bike, regardless of whatever it is, especially my Bianchi. There, I feel better already.

Does she happen to show up in group rides? Or A group ride? you can show her how much damage a steel bike can do with the proper legs propelling it..

That's when you throw in an answer like "Oh, really? This bike sucks? I mean, I already have 6,000 miles on it this season and I haven't noticed any problems... How long have you had yours?"

Most of those noob idiots have no idea what real riding is all about. She probably found what the guys at the LBS told her was the "best" bike (because what else WOULD the LBS people tell a rich lady with no clue?) and rides it 10 miles a week, but since it's more than the combined weekly mileage of her bridge club she fancies herself a serious rider.

A healthy dose of perspective is always fun...

Or...

"I thought about the Fuji carbon, but after hearing about all those forks snapping with no warning whatsoever, I decided against risking the hospital visit. You didn't sign anything when you bought yours, did you?"

"Yeah, I was watching the Pros in the Tour de France this year, and none of them ride Fujis, so I figured I'd go with the Bianchi."

or...

"Bianchis are made in Italy. Where is Fuji manufactured again?"

Gotta hit where it hurts--the snob appeal.

Oh boy, typical fat chick noob. Bet she is proud of her weekly 5 mile rides around the cul-de-sac in her $200,000 per capita income neighborhood.

You should have just said to her what you wanted to say to her and spared us the long winded whine.

PS your bike is too heavy

From the description, it sounds like he could have asked her "do you take a lot of solo group rides?" It would have been a few hours before she figured out she got dissed.

Here is the PROPER procedure to deal with snotty noobs:

- Take cycling glove (full-fingered for best effect), slap noob on cheek
- Say, "you sir (or fat chick,) have offended my honour! I challenge you to a duel!"
- Go to the steepest climb within 50k, & own his/her ass.
- Say "God, how can your husband ride something so heavy?"
- See where they ride back home, & then follow them. Blow by them, & then stay 50 metres in front of them, so they think they can still catch you.
- Slow down a bit so they think they've got you, & just sprint away, with the single-finged salute in your wake.

THAT is how you avenge yourself.

It's not the bike. If you don't know that you haven't ridden much.

I didn't buy this bike in an attempt to validate myself or impress anyone. I bought it to ride.

There is no way I could have kept my mouth shut in that situation. Your comments about the husband riding something so heavy would have shut her down...hard...LOL
