Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I want out of this game- add a derailer?

I'm kidding. I'm keeping my fixed gear. But does anyone know if it's possible to add a derailer hanger to something like a bianchi san jose? Short of having a frame builder remove and replace the dropouts?

you can put a derailer on your fixed gear, but if you want to have more than one cog on your bike (that is, to make the derailer USEFUL) you will have to swap out the fixed gear cog for a freewheel.

how would I add a derailer to a bike with track ends? with the exception of those very cheap derailers with the integrated hangers.

actually it would be quite easy you would have to make a hanger out of aluminum like the san jose then just weld it onto the fork end and your done

I'd go with an internally geared hub.

I agree. You could put a Nexus 8 hub in there.

That seems like the way to go. Bostonfixed, I PM'ed you. Do you have a touring frame lying around? Oh, and retem, the san jose is steel. Welding aluminum and steel together is, from what I hear, not quite impossible, but requires a process called "explosive welding" and it's really expensive and very few people can do it.

Welding a derailleur hanger onto a steel frame is even easier then, but still, I'd go with an internally geared hub: you wouldn't f with your frame, the paint on the dropout(s) wouldn't be ruined, and the internal gear setup would still "look" like a single gear setup, at least at first passing glance.

I'm guessing a nexus 8 setup might run $150-200, built up into a wheel.

Why don't you just get the Volpe instead of the San Jose?

+1. throw a 3 or 7-8 speed hub on there, and you're set.
much easier than trying to get gears working correctly on a single speed bike.

This company sells replacement hangers. Should be able to find one that would work.

I think this looks really clever, 2 in one chain tug and derailleur hanger. 'Cept you don't need the tug with a derailleur...

Just as much as you need it without one. That's why geared bikes use vertical dropouts these days.

I have one and the maker is Nemoto san of RAP keirin frames. I posted a pic before and will do another one.

It slide on the rear end and you just tighten it up. nothing happens to the frame.

You can get good derailleurs that have integrated hangers
look for a shimano Saint or Hone. They bolt directly to the rear hub.

Basically what you would have to do is first find a wheel that spaced at what you need 120mm if its steel you can just bend it a little and go bigger.

then you get a bolt on derailer to a solid 1cm axle, intense does something like this, im not going to search for you to find exactly how to do it but its been done and actuatly the shop im working at (black sheep) is going to start having these bolt on derailer hangers made.

Yeah, I would also suggest Saint. Nobody got fired for buying Shimano Saint components
