Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

RyanF,

I see many post where you write about being a smasher, if you are going to cycle very long, you better learn how to spin.

I'm closer to a spinner than a masher. I like to protect my knees (except when I ride my fixed gear).

I generally mash until I injure myself, then I get really religious about spinning, then as the months go by, I slowly get back to mashing, then I injure myself... It's a vicious cycle. (<-I realize this is the worst pun ever, I'm sorry.)

There was that one guy with the high cadence who kept beating him, though, right?

Masher, I take pride in going up hills in my 50X25 while everyone else is struggling in their easiest gear. Even if my RPM is 40.

really only relative to Lance and only on rpms. I don't recall anyone ever saying his pedal stroke sucked.

Lance spins / Jan mashes was more a marketing thing; probably more accurate to say that all grand tour riders spin, and a few like Lance are spin like crazed hamsters on an exercise wheel.

I'm a spinner. I rarely get out of the saddle on my roadie.

My fixie makes me work on my mashing skills on those steep hills, though. It also makes me hone my smooth high-cadence spinning skills going down the aforementioned hills.

Hey don't question whether I'm a masher, that woman that accused me of taking liberties with her made the whole thing up!

But seriously, a spinner's a winner.

Lol - I haven't been paying attention to the road side of things as much lately. Who's this RyanF guy that gets folks worked up? El Diablo seems to think he's Cypress. I don't think so. Cypress can spell for one thing.

Ryan I am doing some 3000 ft 11-14% climbs over memorial day. Why don't you meet me for Mt Petit Jean, Magazine and Neebo in Arkansas and I can get some video of you mashing up these grades.
