GT Timberline all terra late 90's

Hi guys,
Chris here from Luxembourg. Just picked up a late 90's gt timberline all terra. I'm planning on rebuilding it for commuting/touring. I already stripped the paint and got rid of all the old components. I'm planning on buying some sputnik rims but my question is this bike able to become a 10 speed?
I'm also gonna add some drop bars. Mostly some Shimano XT components. What do you think. ?
thanks

Hey Chris,

Welcome to BF! GT’s are great bikes to ride. If the spacing is 137 you should be able to run a 10 speed. I take it you want to roadify this Timberline? Make sure the frame geometry will work for you.

show pics as you progress!

fun! what color? mine was red! I first got an 18" measured from the crank center to the top of the seat tube. (plus that's what the label read) had a blast with it until local shop told me it was too small for me

then I hunted down a bigger All Terra! I'd have to research what size it was tho, I think 20" or 22"

hey rumrunn I meant the measuring for the size of the cassette but thank you.
I have a 22 inch frame size. It's a little to big for me . i'm 5 feet 10. but I think i'll manage.
I actually already stripped and painted mine.it's original color was blue metal. I spray painted it sand color. Anyway I will post pictures soon.

Measure between the inside surfaces of the dropouts.

As for frame size, my '93 Talera is a 20" and I'm 5'8", and it fits just right. I do have long legs for my height, however. So your 22" may be okay, depending on your leg/torso proportions. The TT GTs have relatively short top-tubes compared to other frames of the same seat tube height.

Space should work but, are you treating this like a mountain bike or a road bike? My Karakoram Elite is from the early 90’s, 20 inch framed and at 5’9” fits me well.

Grabbed this about a year ago. Love these GT’s, but I don’t get to enjoy this. Our son is riding it in college.

Nope, this is the factory color. Pretty much original condition except for the stem.

New color is great, looks classy. Until recently, the Timberline was my only Mountain Bike, great for chasing my hunting dog around the local timber co. & fire roads. Pics:

I rode a grey one in a sprint triathlon. 15.01 mph for the 15 miles. 2 roadies were making wiseass remarks as they approached from the rear, until I nailed the fresh possum road kill.
