Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's nice to have one more thing to try to justify the hard-to-justify price of my bars.

Actually, I think that I paid ~$160 combined for the bars on the Haanjo (3T Rotundo Team) and Domane (Bontrager something or another), so not bad at all, relatively speaking.

I have broken a chain once or twice in 60 years of riding. I rarely go above 6 speed freewheels/cassettes.

The Bontragers were a CL find for $60. I was a little wary of buying used, but there's a lot less to them than a frame; a little time spent trying to break them with my bare hands gave me the confidence to buy and install them and the several thousand miles ridden since have made me forget any reservations.

I really want to pick up some RW boots some time soon. Even though I have a Red Wing shop about 3 miles away from home, I'll have to drive an hour to buy them in Red Wing, MN, naturally.

True too. I never broke a shift cable on the old-school drivetrains either.

I still wear them as I get a yearly voucher from the co. I work for now but they're all made overseas now. Not the same quality. Better than walmart brand though.

Redwing makes some nice boots. I had a couple of pairs in my teens, when they were a cheap, utility, brand.

Can't speak for the socks or the other RW brands, but the boots are still made in MN. Some have imported materials, but you can actually filter selection based on those parameters.

Yeah, I wish they were still cheap.

I was pretty close on a ride within the last month or so. It's a really nice area, would be great for riding. Just getting there is a 100 mile round trip, though.

Alexandera Houchin was the overall women's winner of this year's Tour Divide and also broke the women's single speed record. She rides with Redwing Boots, flat pedals, and denim jorts. https://bikepacking.com/news/alexand...9-tour-divide/

I became aware of her at this year's Dirty Kanza. On Friday afternoon all the DKXL 350-mile riders take off and I saw this woman on a single speed with flat pedals and jorts and I thought "damn, that's pretty bad ass."

As it turns out she (a) rode her bike from Iowa to Emporia to the start; (b) we had some pretty terrific tornadoes and thunderstorms in the region that week and she had to hide out a couple times; and (c) during the actual DKXL one of her flat pedals broke, but she happened cross paths with someone who had a spare Eggbeater so she zip tied the platform to the Eggbeater and finished the last 60 miles or so that way.

Apparently she had similar pedal issues at the Tour Divide and finished on a cobbled-together repair.

So yeah, Redwing boots... and a wheelbarrow full of bad-assery.

WhyFi, oh learned one, what is your take on Robusta coffees used in espresso blends. Nespresso doesn't use much Robusta overall, but it does appear in their espressos fairly routinely. Is it a valuable contributor to the expected flavor profile for espresso, or is it just a way to cut cost. Seems like the darker roasts have more Robusta. Any comments you can make about this? We Americans are so brainwashed to believe that only Arabica is worthy of our hard earned shekels, I was just wondering.
