Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looks like everybody's already gone to work. I should do the same. One more morning with the chainsaw.

I have been driving the one or two days/week when I have to work in my New Jersey office. Other than that, I ride, walk or take the bus to work and to most other places in the city unless I am picking up a lot of stuff like 35 lb. bags of kitty litter. My Subaru just went over 9,100 miles. It's just over 40 months old.

I joke. I push myself to the point of tunnel vision and a funny parasympathetic bowel and bladder feeling a few times a month with no ill effect. Sadly, I can’t get my HR over 168 or so, anymore. Used to go like a motor.

I once finished a college XC championship and collapsed with overwhelming vertigo and had to be helped out of the chute. I ended up holding onto the grass with both hands to keep from falling off the earth and crawling to the team van. Good times. I wish I’d had HR monitoring for those races.

If he/she had a car, I hope it would be a Saturn.

BTW the Saturn's annual inspection is due next month. I have my fingers crossed that any necessary repairs/maintenance will be low cost. Mrs datlas has made it clear that she does not want to sink too much money into a car that's worth only a few hundred bucks. Sad!

No chance for things to dry out here, between the rain and the snowy deep-freeze.

XC sucks, it's the first thing you're pushed into whenever you join a track team (and don't have obvious blazing speed). I'll never forget hearing news of the JFK assassination while in the locker room following XC practice. One of those "where were you" moments. Fortunately I had enough speed to graduate to doing more enjoyable 200 and 400 yard events.

If a fred posts the 9,347th thread about whether to wear shorts with a chamois, does it make a sound?

Plus, I already have the trainer set up.

Zwift intervals don't quite give me the post-ride analysis figures that TrainerRoad did (and now TR has gone much deeper, from what I gather, but I'd not be making much use of that, anyway), but that's really a secondary concern. The main thing is having decent workouts available and the metrics on-screen (I'm a simple man). In that regard, Zwift is good enough. The graphics/courses are occasionally a nice distraction, but it's really neither here nor there most of the time. Maybe I'll join a virtual group ride sometime, but if that never happens it's a-okay, too.
