Oily chemicals are much better for you. 
If I'm ever to a point where I'd consider putting oily chemicals on my skin just to go outside, I'd kill myself.
There certainly hasn't been generations of people who spent the overwhelming majority of their time outside with no ill effects. History doesn't exist. People have always lived indoors and have always feared the sun.
The ancient people called it great giver of light and death.
Heck if you go to any number of countries there is a vast number of people who spend most of their time outside with no ill effects. Mexico is a good example that you could travel to right away.

I try to ride when sun straight up. Regular helmet does pretty good job with just a dab of sunscreen on ears. Arm coolers with knee high socks and I go. AM or PM rides gets sunscreen on all open skin. Also four times a year visit with skin doc.

I totally agree high SPF sunblock is the only way to go. After my radiation treatment for skin cancer on my face, I opted for wearing a "Dabrim" which is a brim that attaches to a bike helmet. (I think that there's at least one other brand name) It wouldn't work for someone concerned with wind drag but it is a great option for additional protection in addition to using the high SPF sunblock. It shades the back of the neck and face pretty well.

I searched for a solution for a while after my skin cancer on my nose that required radiation treatment. I had used sunscreen ever since I started riding but the doctor said the cancer could've been the result of a childhood sunburn 50 years ago. The best solution that I have found is a product called "Dabrim" which is a brim that attaches to your current helmet. It is not an option for someone concerned about wind drag but I am a slow rider that like long rides to it works for me. It is hardly noticeable except it is a little annoying on descents. It comes in 3 brim sizes and I use the middle one which provides good shade for the back of the neck and face. It looks a little (or a lot) dorky but better than another bout of cancer.

Kids spray on sunscreen from Walmart. Fit's easily in jersey pocket for longer rides. Close eyes spray on face, neck, ears and specially back of the neck. Hose down exposed arms and legs. Easy peezy lemon squeezy.
No burns evah. It's like SPF 75 or something.

I love my buff, but it is too hot come summer. These cheap ripoffs are a lot lighter, though I would still wear sunscreen underneath if I burned easily.
There's also the Da Brim. Saw some older tourists wearing them last year and the hats really seemed to help.

If you are going to use sunscreen on your face, read the label. Find one without avobenzene. Avobenzene is the ingredient that burns your eyes when your sweat starts running.

Nice thing about Buffs is you can get them wet, they do provide a lot of cooling.
