Bottecchia Giro D'Italia w/Sage 300 EX Group?
I found this bike on Craigslist & bought it for $200; which I thought was a great price - until I saw that it has Sage 300 EX group set - most of the ones I saw researching it have Campy.
It also has the back drop out painted black - there are some scratches but it doesn't look like a break or crack was repaired.
Why paint it black if hiding scratches?
Are the Sage 300 EX a factory group set?
What year is it? (sticker showing races they've won goes to 1989, so I'm guessing it's a 1990 at least)
What is it worth?
Thanks all; I appreciate any help!

I'd be checking the crown race/lower headset cup junction first. Something odd going on there. Bent steer tube at the fork crown? Or just a loose headset?

Not only what Bill said about the lower cup, but note that the threaded race up top is silver while the lower cup is black. Cobbled together, perhaps?

Definitely something odd with the headset.
Also looks like the left rear dropout has been sleeved and welded.
Nothing weong with Exage components, though, they are fine workmanlike items.

That lower section on the NDS seats at does look like tyere's something weird going on. At first I thought the paint was just chewed up in that area, but it does look like there could be some thickening of the stay right above the dropout....
It looks to possibly be quite a nice Bott, but it looks like it did live quite a hard life, so it will he good to carefully check it out before considering buying it....

I looked at rear drop out in sunlight & didn't see any weld marks - or anything unusual; no extra thickness either. But I'm no expert - ie what is the head set I should look at? I will take it to a local bike shop that packs the bikes I sell on eBay & have them look at above mention areas.
Thanks all

The headset appears to be an inexpensive steel version with a plastic cover sitting over the lower cup. The plastic cover may be dislodged or damaged but the alignment of the underlying cup and crown race appears OK. The top cup may just have lost it's plastic cover.
Based on reference to Lemond's 1989 Campione del Mondo victory, the bicycle is no older than the 1990 model year. That is also the year that Shimano Exage 300EX had its debut, so it may be OEM.

Yes could just be a cheap plastic cover on the lower cup
