What wheels for Bianchi TSX build???
Hi All,
As mentioned in a previous build I have picked up and ex pro Bianchi TSX - starting to look at wheel options - I am leaning towards Campagnolo Shamal TPW Titaniums 16 hole, possible period Campagnolo Electrons if I can find any - anyone care to weigh in?

Will be built for fast road use on nice days, hence the thinking of Shamal TPW probably with velflex 25mm tubs just to make it ride extra peachy...

What difference does it make? The bicycle blue book says it is only worth a max of $345.00 anyways.

To answer your question though, tubulars are definitely the way to go. I don't have experience with the Shamal wheelsets, but I do respect Campagnolo so I'm sure they will be sweet.

Columbus TSX I would have guessed early 90’s. Campy Record 9 would be nice. I have a set of 8 speed era deep dish Ventos that I like a lot. I got them for fun and bling factor but they are actually slightly lighter than the Chorus Hub/ Ambrosio Giro D’Italia wheels they replaced and they ride very nicely. I have another wheelset I built - Record 9 speed hubs laced to anodized Campy Omega 19 rims that look and ride really nicely.

If they didn't need to be 100% vintage correct, you could build up some wheels that sorta look the part with polished deep-section rims from Velocity (Deep V) or H+Son (SL42). Looks like neither offers their deepest rims polished AND in a low spoke count though.

Need to be period correct - looking like it will be 16 spoke shamal tubs on 9 speed freehub - can`t be doing with the 8 speed screw on hub...

I am not big on those low spoke count super deep V wheels. I built my '99 MegaProXL Ti with good old fashioned tubulars
I bought these Mavics but seldom rode them.
I put this pair of aero profile clinchers on to sell it
The MegaProXL is on the far right with the aforementioned tubulars. Unfortunately there was an issue with the blue rear and I had to settle for a silver replacement.

You are correct, its a tricky period to really nail a wheel choice as there was a lot of change just happening. Looking at the Bianchi brochures I figure my TSX is around `95 or `96 as has ergo shifter fittings rather than downtube shifter fittings and as I can`t figure out which team it might have been with (I find that building up an ex team bike or a replica is kind of straightforward as you just use the same components) I`m leaning towards the Mercatone Uno Bianchis (yes, I know, not the same model but they are just the coolest bikes ever...) so Shamal or Electrons would be the way to go - though Electron tubs just don`t exist...
If you have any ideas/educated guess on the frame do let me know, Dan.

Where did the frame come from? It is always possible it was a local Pro-Am sponsorship deal and they got the Ergo bosses in a group purchase.
Is the group on this bike going to be compatible with other Bianchis or lesser bikes in your stable? I'd build it with a pair of wheels you have and then try different wheels. You might not like how this rides with a deep V rim. I like the look and feel of a nice box section tubular nominally silver.

Yep, I have decided to go with some lower profile tubulars - have just picked up some c record 24 hole front and rear hubs and a nos Ambrosio Sprinter rim in 24h.... just got to track down another....
