This frame was manufactured in France, during February, 1977. The Aztec style lugs indicate a hi-tensile steel, base model. Lack of chrome on fork tips would typically indicate an A08 but this may be a repaint. It could also have started out as a U08, U09 or UO10, if it's repaint. Regardless, they are all the same frame, except for cosmetic differences. The brakes are non-OEM,

The lack of decals is a bit confusing and makes it hard to determine the year (the serial number likely offers no help) (edit to say kudos to T-Mar for knowing otherwise!) However, given the lack of chrome and the head lugs, As well as the lack of braze-ons for lights or fenders, it likely is an AO-8, the lower end of Peugeot’s ten speed line in the 70s. However! Many of us here think that the « Tube special Allégé » Peugeots are wonderful riders. I bought an AO-8 and was so impressed I rebuilt it from the ground up, adding modern touches as I went. It is a truly wonderful bike. The folks here have seen this pic a million times by now, but it was worth every penny.

FYI, your bicycle is not an AO8 but the more rare AE8, which was basically an AO8 frame with the addition of rack eyelets on the upper seat stays and a factory included rack and fenders. Unlike the higher UE8 frame, it did nor have a factory supplied lighting system and therefore lacked the brazed-on generator boss and brazed-on lighting harness clips, in addition to the chromed fork blade tips.

Aw, T-Mar. Note that my bike has braze-on shift bosses, two sets of brazed-on bottle stops, and Campagnolo cable guides brazed on to the bottom bracket, and (although it is hard to see) all of the fender and rack mounts were replaced with M5 standard fittings. The rack mounts also were added at the same time. In short, I stripped the frame, took it to Haulin’ Colin (Seattle’s version of Gugie), and turned that beautiful old frame into a modern bike. And as for the dynamo, it’s in the front hub. :-)

Yes, I noticed the bottle mounts but they were a common and cheap upgrade with a pop riveter. Many of the Peugeot of this era used a brazed-on shifter boss with a peek-a-boo lever clamp. The only thing out of the ordinary are the brazed-on BB cable guides and they weren't visible in your picture, so it was easy to mistake it for a slightly updated AE8. Not very many people go to trouble and expense of updating an A08 with brazed-on fittings.

I am a bit out of the ordinary, I admit. The old thing was so nice to ride but so beat up that I had to treat it to a nice new wardrobe. I admit, too, that Peugeot simply sits well with me. Here is my 1984 Corbier - not as much modified, but also worthy of kind treatment.

The bottom bracket will be French, yes. I have used both Phil and Velo Orange bottom brackets with success, although I have had « issues » with both. On my AO-8 pictured above, I had to file down a frame tube that was protruding into the bottom bracket shell before I could get the Phil to slide in all the way. On another French bike I could not get the Velo Orange cups to seat fully. I discovered that the threads in the BB shell were not wide enough to allow the Velo Orange cups to screw in all the way. A Phil, with its narrow cups, would have fit without problem.

Yes, but if you consider the price, VO might be more to your liking.

...please specify what you mean by "the new cranks". It means different things to different people, as I discovered recently.

+1. While there are still some specialty companies catering to the square taper crowd, most modern cranksets use oversize spindles and they never bothered to manufacture compatible bearings for obsolete French threaded frames.

To be honest i dont know what to aim for ! My goal is to rebuild this bike all black !!! less possible writing design etc. If you guyz have any pieces to recommand i am all in ! as for wheels , cranks , gears the whole package ! Thats actually my first bike build , never touched to any custom bike before , i know i didnt choose the easiest one to start with. Its all about challenge haha ! i love vintage too so it was a no brainer for me to pick a vintage peugeot

What is your budget? Will you want a double or triple crank? Do you prefer a vintage look, or all new and modern?

Id say around 1250 , i dont have any preferences regarding to triple or double , 10 speed would please me. i live in a flat area so that would be perfect. i just want to keep the frame vintage , rest has to be new but black.
