What year is this Trek 820 Aluminum? (red and black) deora LX / altus

I just bought this at a pawn shop in Orlando for $70 after a little negotiating. I'm into vintage roadbikes and I know little about MTB. It is aluminum fram crmo forks and has rear deora LX and front altus, 550 26" wheels. It looks pretty new but Treks web slte says that this bike is a steel frame. Is the steel frame more or less desirable than aluminum for MTB? Needs a new seat (tore) and grips (ugly) but besides that it is in great shape. Yes bike collecting is an addiction.

Looks like late-90's to me. Try looking at bikepedia for a more accurate estimate.

Based on the info from vintage trek, it is most likely a 1999 820AL.
