I still have my 1984 Ross Mt. Rainier. I still have the original bull moose bars in case I ever want to put it back to original. I just replaced the bottom bracket a few weeks ago since the spindle finally showed some pitting. I bought this bike new. The sad thing is that it is a few months older than my wife.

Thanks! This has been a great bike. I have kept it as nice as possible. Up close there are some minor scrapes on the paint, but nothing you wouldn't expect to find on an almost 30 year old bike that has been ridden.

Here's the completed "twin" to the one in the OP. I bought this one for $20 several months back and was shocked to see one in my size let alone seeing one just like it with the same groovy paint!. My goal was to only put $50 in it total but the first ride in to work revealed the rear tire was shot so I just replaced it....so it cost a little more than $50 but still worth it.

I converted it into a 1x7

The Cascade did not see too many miles last year... did not have the time to consider much touring but this spring it has seen some nice upgrades to the wheels and drive and hope to get out for some multi day trips.

Arvon hubs laced to CR18 rims... triple cartridge bearing in the rear, standard front hub... and new Marathon Racers.

After so many years and so many miles this bike is like a favourite pair of shoes... always perfect and the standard by which other bikes gets judged.

My 90's steel mountain bike was stolen... in the 90's. I can't remember what it looked like.

I need to give that bike some love. I didn't realize that bike was becoming a classic already. I still have all of the original components for it.....time for a full restoration!
I've still got my 95 Kilauea (exactly the same frame), it's in bits at the moment awaiting a respray. Still my main MTB though! Also still have my 95 Bontrager Race, which is a beautiful frame, but too small for me really. And it needs a new BB, new headset and various other new bits. I should get these things sorted out...

Sorry to revive this thread, but that bike looks amazing. Do you still have it?

Still loving my 1996 GT Outpost, which I now use for commuting and touring. There's nothing like owning and riding a bike that you know right down to the smallest component. I can get on this thing and ride a hundred miles without even thinking about a mechanical check, because I know I can jury rig any part that breaks out on the road. I hope she never, ever dies!

1991 Specialized Team Stumpjumper with full suntour grease guard gruppo. Pretty much original other than the saddle, seatpost (had to have a black seatpost on this bike), pedals (clipless), and the handlebars (replaced the stock bar with a trekking bar):

Soak the seat post with penetrating oil. I use AeroKroil which my Dad calls skunk piss. (lol) Let it set for a day. After waiting put the seat post in a vice and turn the bike. The seatpost should break free. if that doesnt work you could heat the seat tube with a torch to make it expand while applying a damp cloth to the seatpost to keep it cool.

I have a 90s nishiki which I maintain every weekend, but it keeps emitting this "clanky" noise at regular intervals, I know it's either coming from the mid-section of the bike (crank, FR, BB, or possibly chain) but I cannot figure out what is it that's causing the noise. According to sheldon it might be a link in the chain that's stiff, but I've checked it and I couldn't find it.

Other than that, I ****ing love it. (can I curse in this forum?)

Most likely a bottom bracket. The cage bearings are probably mangled. Time to replace.

Had a new cartridge BB put in my 80's Schwinn High Plains when I could not find replacement outer races.

it only cost about $65 installed, from a small local shop.

Wow!

I went though the whole post and yours is the winner. Too bad Ross couldn't make bikes like that or they would still be in business.

I still have my 90's era heavy tank of a MTB, it's a Giant Rincon that I bought on year end closeout, but for some reason mine came with Shimano XT derailleurs and shifters which has just been a plain nightmare, which made me wonder what the lower end components that was suppose to come with it were like. Everything else on the bike appears to be original factory spec'd stuff. It's scratched up a lot but it was bought to be a beater and beat it I did.
