For all you anti STI/Ergo folks

https://www.bikerumor.com/2011/11/28/...or-cyclocross/

JSharr posted this in Foo... not certain why. Now you can keep your DT type shifters and experience the joys of shifting from the hoods.

lol

I can appreciate some ingenuity, and that would be OK for some cobbed together beater. As far as C&V goes(read: being concerned about aesthetics), those things aint goin to win no beauty pageant.

Wow, that looks prettier than the kelly take-offs that I use for the same purpose, but at $140 for the mounts alone, that's pretty pricey. I guess I paid $30 for my tektro brake levers and $50 for the take-off mounts, so I'm about $80 in for the same functionality but uglier. Wouldn't want to go more than that and I can shift from the tops as well as the hoods.

Not the best looking, but at least it's better than the kelly's. The Kelly's are probably the ugliest things to grace a bike.

But for $140, just get some brifters...

Unless of course you want to run them in friction mode

Personally I like the idea from a functional standpoint. I agree about the aesthetics but sometimes it isn't about aesthetics. These would be good on MN winter bikes when you'd like to shift from the hoods, don't want to get a brifter all gunky, and NOT take your hands off the bars to shift on slippery roads.

They're not meant to look pretty, of course. They're meant to be practical for cyclocross.

I like them but I'd expect them to cost about half of what they do. For $140 I'd either buy used or spend a little more and get brifters.

Neat... anything that helps keep DT shifters in production is cool by me.

According to Tonkin at Kruger's crossing last week
" Some local guy makes them, they work nice for commuting but are gonna be pretty unergonomic for racing. But you don't really need to shift for this race anyways."

So since you can't shift from the drops, and there are only a couple comfortable gears to shift through on the hoods, just get barend units.

+1

Very clever. There is always room for new ideas. Initial debut, positive for me as well. I'd try a set if the price becomes reasonable.
But I wonder if the company will run into legal matters taking Tektro's lever design as a base.
Also, since Tektro discontinued the R100/200 line, supply is going to be a future problem. They are at Tektro's mercy, unless Tektro continues production or sells the tooling of R100/200 levers.

Is it just me, or is this somewhat similar to Suntour Commands?

I love it...and I'd have used this on a few bikes if the option had existed.

As to Roger's comment on aesthetics (which I appreciated because it was more honest than we usually are), beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me things that work are also beautiful and I think it looks interesting. I think sometimes we confuse aesthetically attractive with things that we grew up with and are used to. Yes - it's different, but that doesn't mean ugly.

Suntour Commands were one of the things that inspried this product (according to the guy who manufactures them) and this looks like the next step in that initial train of thought.

I think that is absolutely brilliant. It would probably be great for other applications, too - more than just CX.

I'm thinking touring...where you don't use the drops much (I rarely use them regardless), replaceability is probably better than STI and durability counts.

I was actually going through the parts bin at my LBS the other day and found a similar system with a shimano lever/boss for this purpose. I wonder if it was fabricated or if was a small-time production.

Slightly off the topic... I saw these on a CL bike. What is their purpose, a stem shifter replacement?

And for those of you who like the newfangled shifters, what bike(that YOU would ride) would you put them on?

I'd put them on the winter Litespeed I'm building up - currently with Command Shifters. These are actually my dream system for that bike. I'd also consider them for my Koga Miyata when/if I ever get to take it long distance.

The exage ones were exactly what you thought - a better version of stem shifters.

Had these on a bike for a while. They actually work pretty well. I gave it to my girlfriend and she liked them much more than DT shifters.

For the new shifters... I'd probably use them on a beater/commuter.

I've been racing cross for over ten years now and I cannot see how those are any more practice than brifters. One thing I will agree with is that it is nice to be able to dump a whole cassette with one stroke in a cross race. I do miss that having converted from par end to STI a few years back. But it's all what ever you get used to.

Looks like it would work well with indexed shifters and be a pain to modulate with friction shifters. But for the price there's no reason not go get STI shifters, shimano 5600 10 speed shifters are only like $100 used and it would take a pretty hard direct hit to break one.

I like the idea of being able to swap right and left, but I know so little about all that other stuff, I'll leave it at that.
I'm trying to build a C&V tri-bike, and I'm looking for those mounts that allowed you to mount DT shifters on the aero bars.
