1949 Raleigh Clubman Path Racer

Many of you have seen this bike in posts on this forum.

This is a heartbreaker, but hard times demand harsh sacrifices. I was preparing this bike for the Lake Pepin 3-speed Tour, but unemployment and a foreclosure notice have dictated otherwise. This is an award-winning bike, having captured "Best English Custom" at the Gentleman Cyclist's "All British Cycling Event (ABCE) a few years ago.

Rescued from a barn, once I cleaned all the dirt and bird droppings off the frame, all thoughts of repainting it vanished. The patina was perfect, so I simply preserved it with 3 coats of clear enamel. Then, I went the resto-mod route with a Handsome Cycles Sturmey-Archer 3-speed drivetrain, modern bottom bracket with a chain-guarded single crankset. A SOMA Oxford touring handlebar is mounted upside-down with Antiqued Brooks Leather Ring grips, and a vintage Brooks Professional saddle crowns the cockpit. As you might expect, it rides beautifully, and it is one of my favorite bikes. But the time has come to let it go, so I can pay some bills. Please, no haggling. Price is firm and more than fair at $800. Buyer must arrange shipment.

Absolutely beautiful. It's the rare vintage bike that looks good with a black crank and stem, but this one certainly does. Love how you set up the rear fender as well. Best of luck--unfortunately I just purchased a bike that fills this "niche", otherwise $800 is an amazing deal.

It appears too small for me but I'm sure others would appreciate knowing the size of this fine old bike.

They were only offered in one size, I believe. I think it was 22". nlerner could confirm that, as I think he used to have several.

edit: nevermind. here is info.

GLWS!

As a owner of a Guv'nor Path Racer I think everyone needs one in their rotation. A lot of times I'll put in a 20+ mile workout ride on a road bike after work and then take the Path Racer out after dinner for another 10 miles or so just to enjoy the time out. I lot of my Sunday rides turned into 40+ mile cruises on mine vs a road bike. They truly are a join to ride and really do move out just fine.

Hopefully someone around here snaps this up fast, it will bring a lot of enjoyment to your riding experience.

The frame angles on a Pashley Guv'nor are a lot more slack than the Lenton Clubman, so the feeling won't be quite the same. This bike looks like it would ride more like a typical Raleigh Superbe or other roadster with 26" wheels from that period, which are perfectly splendid but not really comparable to a Guv'nor.

This qualifies as one of the cooler bikes sold here (patina and build). I love the one size fits all approach that Raleigh took with its 22 inch frame. I've seen very few bikes this old for sale here. GLWS.

You're quite right, Kilroy1988. I also own, and may sell, my Pashley Path Racer that was built up (or would that be down?) from a Pashley Roadster frameset. I believe the frame geometry on this is identical to the Guv'nor, and the riding experience is very distinctive from anything else I have ridden.

Will Someone Please Post This to The "Are You Looking..." Thread

I know it's not kosher for me to do this, but my CL ad can be found here: 1949 Raleigh Clubman Path Racer - bicycles - by owner - bike sale (craigslist.org)
I would really appreciate it if someone would post this to the "Are You Looking For One Of These" thread.

Thanks,
DQRider

Here's a weird thought, born of desperation: What about a rideshare deal? 2 or more members get together to buy a particular bike. Then arrange a timed rotation so that each member gets to enjoy the bike for a defined period before shipping it on to the next. That would be an economical way to enjoy a unique ride a couple times a year.

Presentation over. The line for the buffet starts in the back of the room...

I have no need for this beautiful bike, I just wanted to say I'm sorry you're going through a rough time.
