1972 Nishiki Road Compe stem
Hi All, I just bought a really nice Nishiki Road Compe that I want to modify for more comfort. I want to add moustache bars and a new stem (or stem adapter). The problem is this stock stem is 21mm. I thought all of the old Japanese bikes had 22.2 stems. I can not find a 21mm stem and I can't use the original because the new bars are too big (26mm). Are there 21mm stem adapters or is there a 21mm stem with a 26mm clamp? thanks for any help you can give.

It's best to find a 21mm stem or 25.4 bars. This issue pops up often.
Oh, beautiful bike btw. Hope you got it for a good price. They can get pricey, with good reason. I wouldn't pass on one if the price was right.

Would it be crazy to reduce the diameter of my bars from 26mm to 25.4? It seems like a small amount of material to take off...and there is extra thickness. I do not want to give up the nice (expensive) moustache bars that I bought.

Zaphod Beeblebrox has a 21.1 threadless adapter on his Schwinn. PM him, maybe he can tell you where he bought it.

I took my measurements, decided what bar I wanted to use, bought the appropriate Nitto stem and paid my local machine shop $20 to turn in down to 21.1mm. Well worth it.
Don't try to reduce diameter of your handlebars. You can enlarge the clamp of a stem, but this is still less than desirable and is a good bit of work with a Dremel and sandpaper.
You can use the Wald boat anchor stem. It'll take a 26.0mm bar. But, I implore you not to. You have a nice bike.

Every Nishiki I have had from that era had the 21.1 stem. +1 Take the handlebars back, and get a set the right diameter. Existing stem looks pretty good on that bike IMHO.

you can get a 21.1 threaded to threadless stem adapter... also plenty of 21.1 road stems available on ebay (but doubt any have a 26mm clamp).
