It's a small one. When I go kayaking I get close to some that are longer than my kayak. I'll use this as an opportunity to offer to take anyone who visits the area on a pretty cool kayak trip in Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife refuge.

One last aside then we can get back to bikes. This defensive mother came exploding out of the water after me and my dog last summer as we walked along the banks of City Park. They are out of focus, but you can see some of her babies in the background. The only time gators bother me is when they are protecting their young. Then they can be very aggressive.

The hot air balloon event was at a ranch this year. This narrows to two lanes, and the side going to the event was backed up for at least two miles (going by google maps measurement).


The rabbits LOVE the plants at this building. They come across the street from the desert, I see them almost every time I pass this way. This fella is the biggest jack I recall ever seeing and, though he may not seem so impressive in the pic, he looked quite healthy.

First ride on N+1 1981 Fuji Royale. As I came to a fork in the path, I remembered this thread I started, and decided to post another pic.

As I do with all my bikes, I roadsterized this one with an upright handlebar and stem (bad back - can't ride w/drops). This is a new bar to me, a Porteur style bar with 50mm rise from a company called "Action". It's the widest Porteur I've used to date.

The Royale is a nice ride - Fuji 441 chrome moly frame is light and lively. Geometry works just fine with the upright riding position. I have an indexed thumb shifter on order for the right side of the handlebar. The left shifter is gone, as is the front derailleur and big chainring. This is a neighborhood cruiser, so it doesn't have to be fast. 6 gears are plenty.

Further exploration of the local rivers this weekend, I rode my Velo de Ville to the town of Hudson, WI on the Saint Croix River.

A couple of changes to this cockpit - I swapped the "dressier" Brooks Slender Grips for these Plumps, as they are much more comfortable. I also relocated the shifter from the stem to the right handlebar, MTB style. Much more convenient that way. I really like the way this bike is evolving.

We stopped for ice cream shortly after these shots were taken. It was a beautiful day for a ride.

The bars were unbranded. 38cm wide, 20mm drop, slight back sweep, 8" Length, 25.4mm bar clamp. Bars give me three usuable hand position. I primarily place my hands on the corners where I can still reach the brakes with my fingers, the top of bar, and I use the horn part when climbing. I love these bars, they are perfect for my riding style. Bought them on Ebay. During this Dark Mofo Very black theme, so we decide the theme of the ride would be Orange is the New Black. (It should be noted prisoners don't wear orange in Australia, so it's kinda funny to us!) Weather was bad so we only started at 2300ft and descended to sea level, via a few pubs (bars-although we weren't behind them). My bike is the one with the white 12" front wheel. Managed to hit 40mph on it. Hopefully the next ride the weather will be better and we can do the full 4000ft run, the tentative theme is "Blow away the winter blues", dressed as the Blues Brothers. Mind you, if it's as cold as this time, we might go for blue disposable overalls.
