It's the smell of patchouli. It sends cops into a blood frenzy.

Bikes, in and of themselves, are never illegal in the City. Some kinds of behavior are illegal, and unfortunately CM has been so successful in provoking the police that more kinds of behavior have been defined as illegal, although the courts may not allow these new laws to stand.

If you want to know what went wrong with CM, you'll get a pretty good overview if you read back through this thread.

I would ask CM participants/advocates one thing: If what you're doing is cycling "advocacy" or "promotion" or even "celebration", does it not indicate to you that maybe you're going about it the wrong way when so many committed New York cyclists just wish you would go away?

No matter what your political bent if u have any delusion of living in a free society this should be a wake up call.
Every day, there are cars that break the law, and since there are so many of them, they can all be considered to be part of a "group". I think they should start ticketing everybody who drives a car.

And funeral processions - totally unwarranted.

And since RVs take up as much space as a large group of bicycle, throw 'em in the slammer.

I'm sure it would be...and would be helpful for bicyclists.

Critical Mass rides unlike other mass ride ARE illegal because as you well know since you have attended them before, one of the main goals is the disruption of traffic by riding bikes in a manner inconsistent with the law. This includes disobeying traffic signals and blocking (or corking) traffic.

Hence they are illegal.

Hence when you are part of the group, or just on the fringe of the group yet are equiped to take action similar to the group (by being on a bicycle) you get arrested.

Does that sound so ******** to you????

Have you even read the previous posts in this thread? The CM riders in NYC are now obeying all traffic laws. They are stopping for lights, etc, and the police are still giving them citations. Of course, they are bogus and don't hold up in court but it's still a big hassle.
