ultegra vs tiagra cassette

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ultegra vs tiagra cassette

Are you guys able to notice a big difference between say a tiagra 9 speed cassette and an ultegra cassette with the same ratios?

Quicker shifting, and better ability to find the right gear. Less separation between gears.

Ultegra's shifting is just immaculate. Immediate, and precise

It's so immaculate that Shimano made Dura Ace with a cassette that's even immaculater.

Tiagra will feel like a boat anchor, you'll have fewer gear inches for identical gears, and it'll rattle and jump like crazy.

Not really, I can't imagine a "feelable" difference.
I use SRAM cassette with my Ultegra setup and it's super quiet and shifts silky smooth.

The Tiagra one has cooties, which can cause the frame to warp.
And they don't last quite as long as Ultegra because of a softer alloy.

Tiagra is like Viagra, If it last longer than four hours-you should probably call someone.

no noticable difference although tiagra cassettes are probably harder to find. 105 cassettes are cheap and easily found too.

Tiagra shifts smoother than Ultegra. Not as precise and fast though.

Faster this, smoother that - yeah, maybe. One thing you *will* notice is the Ultegra cassette is going to last much, much longer.

Not necessarily. The Tiagra cassette has steel cogs that'll last a long time. The difference is protective coating on the cogs and the quality of the inter-cog spacers, as well as a weight penalty.

That said, they'll both shift fine. And if your budget isn't compatible with Ultegra-level pricing, Tiagra or 105 work great as substitutes (as do the aforementioned SRAM cassettes, which are well-made and work seamlessly with Shimano drivetrains).

I have Tiagra and Dura-Ace, and while Dura-Ace shifts much *smoother*, I do not believe there's any difference in the actual time it takes to shift.

If you have any doubts I would go with 10 speed 105. I assume you're talking about new components - Sora and Tiagra are 9 speed, and 105 and up are 10 speed. In other words, Tiagra and Ultegra shifters and related components aren't compatible.

i have had both. ultegra 9 speed cassettes are still available. the main difference is that about half of the larger cogs on the ultegra cassette are on alloy carriers, lighter and a little stiffer.

if you want a 12-27, then you have to go ultegra or dura ace in 9 speed
