Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2214 miles - typical, slightly more than last year.
109,778' - also typical, but WAY below last year (no Giro holiday this year).
289 rides, 176 hours, 2826 kudos, 73 new PRs.

Because those numbers include more than 200 little rides on Citibike (most of which are only about a mile), ratios look really lame - only 36 minutes, 7.7 miles, 380' per ride, but if I exclude Citibike, they look a little less lame. Only 77 activities, but 139 hours for 1892 miles and 105,095', so 1.8 hours, 24.6 miles, 1,365' per ride. Yeah, I'm slow, but it's kind of hilly where I live.

If I hadn't been so lazy during April and May, getting my weekday cycling fix from Citibike alone, I would be much further along. At the beginning of June I was way below previous years, but I've caught up, with this past month being one of my best - two centuries helped.

3700 miles, a mere 67,000 feet of elevation, so I am ahead of my goal of 6k for the year. Most of these miles are commuting miles. I suck at hills and don't like them and there's only 500 ft on the commute. May was a great month with 800 miles and four metric centuries, but that's because I took a week of vacation and biked a lot. If the winter rains are light in November and December, I shouldn't have a problem. Or just HTFU and ride more.

3168 miles
107,661 feet
180.5 hours

I'm behind where I was last year, largely because the winter was awful and I missed a bunch of commuting miles. Of well. Will likely get 7-8k miles this year

1146 miles of riding/ 44,500'
710 miles of running
95 miles of swimming

Three tris, my first century, and my first two-day bike tour,

And it turns out my bike has had a busted derailleur hanger all this time so the shifting has been more like friction than indexed.

2265 miles and 55000' climbed over 164 rides. I've been riding a lot, but I still don't know how I'd get to 6000 for the year. I commute by bike 20 miles R/T, I ride other days too, I take longer rides on weekends, I rode indoors all winter. How do you get to 6000 if you work full time?

I've done about 1,300 miles so far, mostly commuting, plus some weekend rides. I think this year will clock more miles than any other in all of my 57 years.

20x5x50=5000 commuting miles if you take two weeks off. Shouldn't be too tough to work in an extra 1000 on top of that.

Yep, riding 5 days a week, the difference between 5,000 in a year and 6,000 in a year is about 15 minutes a day. Just don't always take the most direct route home.

I did 9000+ km quite a few years.

I was working 40-60 hours a week.
I was attending night classes 9 months of the year.
I commuted by bicycle regularly. 68 km/week for approx. 48 weeks of the year = 3250 km.
I didn't have a car so all my transportation was walking, bicycle or bus.
I rode outside year round, except for really bad days. I lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, so it was a bit easier to do that there than perhaps in other places.
And I'm a long distance cyclist ... a randonneur. So a "Super Randonneur" series of 200 km, 300 km, 400 km and 600 km would give me 1500 km of cycling in 4 weekends. Add a 1000 km to that and a 1200 km and we're up to 3700 km.

3700 + 3250 = 6950.

Then I just had to find another 2-3000 km over the course of the year.

I did a CAM some years (Century-A-Month). Some were randonneuring events, others were just me out on the bicycle riding 162+ km.

I'd often extend my commute and get in an extra hour in the evenings in the summer especially or nice days in spring and autumn, 20 km or so 3 times a week, perhaps.

When I wasn't taking night classes, during the summer, I usually tried to get in one 50 km ride after work each week ... long daylight hours.

Throw in 2-3 weeks of holiday time where you're cycling locally 50+ km/day or on a cycling tour somewhere.

Every long weekend, of course, would be a three long rides.

It all adds up.

10000 km at 20 km/h is 500 hours.
A year is 8760 hours.
So cycling would only be 5.7% of your time.

More than half from a smart trainer.

This is is my first year riding seriously, so I am very happy with things so far.

I guess I did manage to do more than 500 in June, so it is possible in the warm months anyway. It is the colder months that make it hard. There is only so much riding I can do indoors, and if I can't do a longer ride on the weekend there is little chance I'll make up the difference. In any case I'm happy with where I am so far, after all this isn't a pissing contest. Oh wait, yes it is.

Strava says: 2,208 miles. I don't report elevation as I live in Illinois and would be embarrassed.

I stopped logging miles with Strava after my crash in February, but I do have an old-school log book which I am inclined to look through at the moment, but if I had to guess I would put my total mileage somewhere between 4000-5000 km.

No idea of anything at this point. I don't keep track of mileage and only send maybe 10 percent of my rides to strava. Based on my usual weekly rides, I'm guessing it's somewhere between 1800 and 2000 miles. Probably 10 to 20 feet of vertical climbing . I have to ride back and forth over the interstate to do any climbing at all here in the Low Country, and I'm not even kidding.

3,400 miles for the year, +/- ~65 because I don't actually have my spreadsheet handy so I'm just trying to remember the number I saw last time I updated it.

Unless your miles are fully loaded (camping and cooking), they don't really count as much.
