Clear Hudz (brake lever hoods) and Rit dye- anybody tried it?

I just got hold of a pair of Hudz for my Campy brifters. Hudz has discontinued the V2 version, so I couldn't find them in brown (gold is what they call it). I bought some clear instead and I'll try to dye them if it seems like a workable plan to you guys (the hoods haven't arrived yet). Something that'll be consistent and not come off on my hands. They were on sale for $8.25, so if it doesn't work, I'll just keep using the black ones.

Any other suggestions? Coffee? Tea?

If it were me, I'd find out what they're made of (e.g. silicone or rubber) and then do a web search on what works for that and also read the Rit package to see if it will dye anything other than fabric. Sounds worth looking into.

I have dyed non fabric plastic stuff with Rit before, but not hoods. Those clear hoods may stay translucent after a dye job.

I can't imagine most rubbers taking a dye all that well. Pigments are added during the manufacturing process, colors aren't done after the product is made. I'd be worried about anything coming off all over my hands.

If the hoods are clear, why not just use red paint and paint it from the inside? I'm sure it will work better than red dye and there won't be any paint to rub off on your hands or gloves.

Actually, I'm looking to make them brown, but plastic/rubber paint is an excellent idea. I'd need some flexibility info, tho.

"However" coloring the inside was my initial thought to. Thinking that anything applied to the outside will likely come off onto your hand/glove.

Maybe this stuff would work for the inside (think coat). And it now comes in the colors you're looking for.

It depends on the color you're trying to get to. Having dyed some clear rubber paintball masks years back, you're going to have to leave them in the dye for a long time to get a non-translucent color. But hey, if you've got the hoods to spare, give it a shot! Rit dye is only a few bucks

I'd suggest leaving the hoods in the dye for 15ish minutes at first, then just take them out every 5-10 minutes until you get to the shade you want. Make sure to rinse them well afterwords, or you're going to end up with dye on your hands/gloves

For what it's worth - I've colored a couple of clear items on the inside - not rubber, but clear things on which I didn't think external color would be durable enough. It will give you an effect that may or may not look great - but they won't look like colored hoods. They'll look like hoods colored from the inside. Like I said, they might look great to your eye, or might be disappointing.

I am curious about the RIT treatment though.

[edit] per my previous post in this thread I did a search on how to color rubber products: https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?...&hsimp=yhs-004

And top of the list was this: https://www.parasolinc.com/Rubber_Dye_Paint.asp
