Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where'd They Go? Dura Ace 7850 C24 CL Wheels Discontinued?

I ordered these wheels last month, and JensonUSA kept pushing out my ship date with no explanation. Now Excelsports has removed them from their website and I can't find these wheels anywhere.
Discontinued?
Is everyone snapping them up in the middle of recession?
Is Shimano about to release the next big thing?
Problems with their durability? (Seems improbable, given the number of riders I know with Big Miles on them.)
Where'd they go?

And for clarity's sake, I'm referring to the CL's, not the SL's. (The Carbon, not the Scandium)

I have wondered what's going on too. I was thinking about pulling the trigger on them from ChainReactionCycles in the U.K., but all of a sudden it disappeared from their website. I suspect that they are selling/sold like crazy. I also think Shimano is about to release a newer version.

They are very very good wheels, from all the reviews I have read on them. And I have read quite a bit.

I screwed up trying to game the Dollar/Sterling exchange rate and waited too long.

Huh. Just got a second set like 6 weeks ago. Great wheels, I have like 5000 miles on the first set, no problems whatsoever.

No wonder there is none left to buy! People like pcad were snapping up multiple sets.

If we are speculating, I'm gonna guess that Shimano will be releasing 7950 C24 CL's (new decals, 20g lighter, $1300 MSRP).

They are still $700 at CRC albeit they are OOS at the moment.

FWIW, I think these are the best factory built wheels in their class (lower profile clinchers) and they blow away the standard Mavic variant.

But, the 7850 hubs are still inferior to options like DT Swiss 240s, even with stock bearings, IMO.

Finally found some on Wiggle (at $100 less than Excel, and $500 less than Jenson. (Man, I love it when the dollar's strong.)) Wiggle's claiming they are in stock, so hopefully they won't pull a Jenson on me.

pictures of the new WH-7900-C24-CL:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/shino_soba/5128359294/

just from eyeballing (as I have the 7850 C24 CL wheelset), the new one has a different seal system for the bearings, new decals, black spokes.

Ach. Danke schon. I don't mind lugging around an extra 20 (claimed) grams to save more than $400.

Thhey all post cheaper prices when the item in question is out of stock. CRC had them for about $732 when I was seriously considering them.

I ordered mine last winter for 675 USD and they were out of stock at the time while Wiggle had them in stock for about 100 USD more. It took a month to get them but they did come. It's in Pcad's old Addiction thread I think.

The 7900 series might actually be lighter because the actual weight of the WH-7850-C24-CL's are around 1440g with rim tape.

The larger C24 decal on the 7900 wheels might add 5+/- grams at most compared to the printed on, "carbon 1380", misleading decal, that rubs off when you clean the rims, on the 7850 wheels.

Short answer, no. The wheels that are in question in this thread use straight-pull spokes.

Otherwise, I have no idea what you are talking about.

I just got them from Wiggle at $794, and now I'm high-fiving myself that Jenson was screwing me around long enough to cancel my order with them.

No, but your skewers and tires might. Maybe even your tire pump.
