These were the widest 27" tires I could find. I am currently riding the tan sidewall tires, I have probably rode 700km+ on them without a flat. On 22.5mm wide rims they measure about 32mm in width. Usually with about 35-38lbs of air. I have rode a lot of gravel on them this year. They are a great fit on my Super Champion rims, tight enough that I needed the help of a tire lever, but loose enough to go on and off the rim without a struggle. They seated properly on the rim immediately, and have a line around the bottom of the sidewall right where the rim meets the tire. Makes it easy to tell if the tire is seated and on properly. There is also grooves on the sidewall for a bottle dynamo. I found them to be a bit faster and more supple than the Pasela TG.

These are the best all-round 27" tires I have found. I highly recommend them if you plan to keep a classic 27" wheelset on the road.

I am very interested to hear from anyone who has tried both the all black (120 TPI) and tan (66 TPI) and can give an honest comparison. I too would like to know why there is such a difference in TPI between them. When my tan ones wear out, maybe I will try the all black ones.

Really? I figured the opposite since they appear to be a much more chunky tread than the Pasela TG. Figured they were more of a dirt road kind of tire. But faster and more supple on smooth asphalt? I may have to buy..

I have a set on my 71 Super Sport. They are very comfortable and seem to be holding up just fine. They've been on there for about a year now.

I don't think the minor differences in tread shape is as important as a supple casing. I think the pasela tg tires were only 27tpi and to me they felt a bit rigid in comparison to the sand canyon (66tpi tan sidewall), even at lower pressure. Just to be clear, the difference isn't night and day. As i feel both are excellent tires for the price. Until Compass or Grand Bois gets into the 27" tire game, the Swifttire sand canyon will be my choice.

I've been using them for... a year and a half or so on my Trek 620.

Most everyone that has 27" wheels, for whatever reason, is pretty much stuck with the usual suspects for 'classic looking' tires- Paselas and CST, and they all top out at 27 x 1 1/4. Several years ago, I got a set of wheels with a set of OLD Specialized tires. A 1 1/4" Touring and 1 3/8" Expedition tire- riding on those tires was like riding on a comfy poofy cloud. But more like a 35 year old comfy, poofy cloud that could explode at any second. I had not seen a 1 3/8" non-knobby tire until I saw the Sand Canyons.

I like the Sand Canyons, they're nice riding tires for what I've used them on. They're currently on my 620 front and rear. Most of their riding time has been pavement and a little unpaved access road type stuff. A little weight, but not 'loaded touring' weight.

They handle well- for just all around riding- I keep them between 60-75; they're not too bouncy even at that pressure.

As far as size- These are both Super Champion/Wolber Modele 58 rims. One with a set of 1 1/4" Panaracer Pasela TG/PT tires and one with the Sand Canyon 1 3/8" tires on.













As far as the "bad," as I have old Touring bikes- the tires don't fit under the fork fender of my 1985 Trek 620 and 1984 Schwinn Voyageur SP. So these big tires don't fit under fenders on bikes that have these notoriously low fork crowns.

They're great tires and I would not hesitate to recommend them.

I just may have to try them then. But to be fair, I have heard - or read in old threads - that the standard 1 1/4 Pasela is a much nicer ride than the tougher Aramid fiber belted TourGuard/PT tire. Something to do with the Aramid fiber belt limiting the full expansion and suppleness. But I haven't heard anyone talk about non PT/TG in a long time and I am not sure if they are readily available... I didn't scour the net looking for them but whenever I happen to see Paselas they are always TG/PTs.

I might just get a couple of these to have them on hand, but most of my travels are on nicely paved rail trails, even my 23mm tires are plenty comfy enough

Yes I have them on an 87 Cresta GT and really like them, they measure out closer to 32 or 33 with the calipers. Nice plush ride like you would expect from a Panaracer product

Thanks for the feedback! I’m currently running some 27”x1.25” Pasela Protites and find them to be a little harsh. I’m hoping these are a little cushier. The Paselas measure out to around 30mm.

I bought a pair from Swift a few months ago. They showed up. They seem fine. I haven't put a ton of miles on them. They don't seem much bigger than 1 1/4" Paselas.

I got mine a season or two ago from Swift. I like them more than Paselas, they are more supple. Kind of remind me of Col de la Vie.

As for the difference between protite and standard paselas, it's significant but I prefer the protites for protection. I did ride last year on some standard paselas and thought they came close to some really expensive tires in ride quality.

I think the knobs of the swift make them a bit squirmy cornering at speed on the roads and paths I ride. I resold them to a BF member and I’m back to riding folding Pasela Protites on my 27” wheels.

So, are the standard Pasela's the supplest 27" or these Sand Canyon's? Where is the best place to buy them? I need some new 27's for my 83 Miyata 610. No worries about flat protection or clearance.

I don't know if they are as good as the sand canyons but they are pretty darn good and can be had for a reasonable price.
