Early Carbon Machine (LOOK KG86 and LOOK KG381)
Hi,
As a part of my commuter bike / training bike, I am thinking of two possible bikes, both of which are same price. Between these two bikes, I am looking for a bike for commuting and possibly for racing in regional competitions. Which one would you recommend?
One is relatively recent 2003 LOOK KG 381 with specs as following,
Frame/Fork: LOOK KG 381 56 cm "L. Jalabert" Signature Edition
H-bar: Cinelli RAM - 1 piece carbon bar/stem CTC 42cm, drop 130mm, reach 90mm stem length 120mm
Tape: Fizik silver tape - have found nothing better to stay clean
Seatpost: LOOK TI - Adjustable setback position
Saddle: Selle Italia SLR
Cranks: FSA Carbon Octalink- English
Chainrings: FSA 7075-T6 130 BCD 53/39
RD: Shimano Ultegra 6500 9 spd

The other bike is the first carbon model ridden in TDF. The same exact model was ridden by Lemond in mountain stage I believe. The specs are,
Frame Model: KG86 Hinault Edition (frame was NOS when I purchased it. The steerer hadn't even been cut.)
Frame Size: 56cm

7-Speed Drivetrain
Rear Derailleur: Mavic 841
Front Derailleur: Mavic 860
Shifters: Mavic Downtube
Crankset: Stronglight Delta (53-39)
Pedals: Avocet with Campagnolo Toe Clips
Bottom Bracket: Campagnolo Italian threaded
Handbuilt Wheelset
Hubs: Mavic 500RD
Rims: Mavic Open Pro 32h
Spokes: DT Swiss
Tires: Continental GP4000S - 700x23mm
Other
Brake Levers: Mavic 440 SSC
Calipers: Mavic 440 SSC? dual pivot brake calipers. (Recessed)

The new one... 2003 LOOK KG 381 ... if only for the rear dropout spacing.
CASS: CS-6500 12-27 19 spd
LOL... there's an unusual item

For racing, I'd go with the 2003 LOOK KG 381. For commuting, neither. Those look too nice for commuting, and, personally, I think that eyelets for fenders and/or racks is important for a commuter.
