Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Unbelievable Andy. Most that have responded put me to shame for how much weight they have dropped but Jesus...you have lost 25% of your body and you were only 210 to begin with. How tall are you? You must be getting a pretty astounding reaction from those that know you. How did you come by some weight loss?...had you not kept up with your cycling previously or were injured and couldn't train?

It's very hard to tell... I was 190lbs... I got down to 170. I quit smoking and went back up to 185 almost immediately (in 3 weeks). Now I'm down to 180. So... I lost 10lbs I guess. Hopefully my metabolism has readjusted and I'll continue to drop a few more as I put on the miles. Quitting smoking wrecked everything for at least a month - my stamina went into the trash, I couldn't get my heart rate up at all, etc. It's been 3 months now and I'm just getting to the point where I can really reap the benefits of being a non-smoker.

Started January at 350lbs, down to 247lbs! Didn't ride for the first 3 months of the year, just treadmill for a half hour 6 days a week. Changed my eating habits, not dieting. I have over 2,600 miles for the year!

Impressive BW! You lost a whole person.

I lost about 6 lbs, 174 to 168 but I lost most of my extra flab last summer. 240 to ~175 from early May to end of October.

I was married in Jamaica at 220lb in Feb 2010, we went back to Jamaica again this Feb 2011 and I was 195lb and was just getting into intervals and the odd run.

Now I'm 164lbs and ride almost everyday....probably take a day or two a month that I don't at least spin out 30 minutes on the trainer or 4 hours on the road. I feel great! 5,11 for height.

Wow that's great! It truly takes an amazing amount of commitment to get started losing weight like that. Easier to stay fat or get fatter. These stories of weight loss are very impressive.

Thanks! Riding the bike has almost become a must do daily task. I think that everyone will fight a new routine but once you get into working out you just feel so much better about yourself. I do it because I feel great physically and emotionally as a stress relieve.

If I don't ride I feel guilty that I cheated myself. It is weird. Some days I have to force myself to ride, rare but happens.

It also makes it doubly hard right now as my wife is pregs so our kitchen is fully stocked with every pastry, chocolate and candy you can dream of. Argh!

Congrats to all who've posted so far... many, many successes! Me, I'm 5'6", and went from 191 to 155 lbs, due to cycling. Put in 3400 miles so far this year. Interesting in that I now find myself eating more each day... so if I want to drop any more weight (and I do want to lose perhaps another 10-15lbs), I still need to curb my snacking. But, at least when I'm bad, I'm keeping the same weight, as I am burning ~2500 calories everyday through cycling...

I lost weight a few years back. Cycling and major change in diet. I expect the change in diet had more to do with it than cycling, though the riding certainly helped. This year, I've ridden 5200 mi and put on 4 pounds. I'm eating too much again.

I dropped 25 between June and Dec last year but haven't budged this year. I think I'm just building muscle at about the same rate as I loose fat now. Not sure, but I've done enough riding to have some effect, one would think, but I'm also not far from ideal for my height.

This is my problem right now. Ever since I dropped to 180, I'm having a hard time not eating a few extra snacks, especially at night when I'm trying to finish some work. Pistachios are great and all but I still find myself occasionally grabbing a slice of left-over pizza or an extra pop. I'm getting better at curbing the cravings - not going to change 5-6 years of bad habits over night - but I know I can do better. I'm trying to come up with a list of quick healthy, filling, snacks that I can pre-make and keep in the fridge.

The one great thing about cycling over every other form of exercise that I've done over the years (martial arts, weight lifting, skiing, running, etc) is that it is addictive. Between the scenery, the fresh air, and intensity, I sometimes find myself restless at night thinking about my next long ride. Weird.

13 lbs since Easter ... but that didn't have much to do with cycling. That had more to do with a diet change to include a whole lot more veggies. What with winter coming on soon after Easter, I didn't get a lot of cycling in between mid-May and mid-August.

However, I put a little bit on during our recent holiday in Canada ... but that will come off again since the days are getting longer and summer is coming, and we will be able to cycle more.

In the last 12 months I've lost about 60 pounds. I can't quantify how much I've lost solely due to cycling and how much has been because of running, swimming, weight lifting, and better nutrition.

30 # since June ....hope to loose another 20. It gets harder to do as you get older, but if you don't; the medical buzzards are circling so hide your wallet!
I'm 66 and was at 220# - the doctor put me on cholesterol medication and was watching for possible onset of diabetes.
When he told me that, I bought a new bike (nice excuse) in 3 months I am down to 190 and loosing... Just did blood work and saw the doc. Triglycerides down from 204 to 89! He cut my medication in half and said I really didn't much need him any more so he doesn't want to see me till next Feb.!

Combination of running, biking, crunches and less rice. I started with full dedication to lose my gut and go down to 160 from 186. I'm at 170 now, but I think I've plateau'd for about 3 weeks now. I think I have to put more emphasis on running now and this week will be a good week. Indian Summer in California starts this week and I think I can at least lose 3 (crosses fingers). It's the last 10 pounds that will challenge me.

I actually gain a few pounds when I start cycling a lot. I'm pretty sure it's the muscle added on, which I don't get when I'm in heavy running mode (which makes me the leanest.) I don't have a lot of bodyfat though, although I'm not super lean either.

I made it all the way to 160 after I got hit and had to sit on my arse for six weeks, up from 155... down to 145 now. Feels good, 140 is the goal.

Some impressive numbers reported. Pursuit of getting fit, changing your body size which improves energy in daily life...all while doing something that is fun is to me what makes cycling so great. Throw in a little friendly competition with your friends, great scenery on a couple of different levels on a really nice bike and understandable how addictive it can be. I train on both a road bike and converted 1X9 29er I built with 32mm slicks and rigid fork to break it up a little...I enjoy riding a bit more upright on the 29er to take in the view better tho still a pretty fast bike...can keep up with an average roadie but not fast guys unless on my road bike.
Now I am looking for a LED head light for my 29er. This is new for me as I have done virtually no night riding but figured with loss of daylight, I am going to try and get out once in a while in the evening after work if the weather permits.

Absolutely no idea but I would ballpark 25lbs with a significant gain in lower body muscle to go with it. I've dropped inches everywhere (5 in the waist) except for my thighs to the point I need to purchase an entirely new wardrobe. Even my dress shirts don't fit properly because my neck came down to a 16 from a 16.5

I'm 5' 10". I weighted 190 when I moved to Denver in Feb. Now 160 as a result of eliminating all food with corn syrup, drinking one quart of green tea/day, working out at the gym 3 times/week, and riding my bike to work, 5 miles each way.
