Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have a 2011 S2 and love it. I bought it because I like it, I need no other reason. I think you either like a bike or you don't. How much is based on looks versus actual performance, who knows. I see a few cervelo's around here, mostly on the tri folks.

I also like that it is a Canadian company eh. I don't care that it is made in China, what isn't.

Well engineered and built bike frames. They seem to try to be the leading edge for frame design and manufacturing.

here's my cervelo experience:

i bought a used aluminum cervelo soloist team after speaking to some people about it - aero and stiff. they said they loved it.
when i got it, i found it incredibly stiff, which meant that it was very responsive and accelerated well. i felt extremely fast on it.
unfortunately, it developed a crack in the seat tube which i believe was a design flaw.
cervelo swapped out the 2006 aluminum frame within a week, no questions asked, set for a brand-new, 2011 S2.
so, their customer service is nice too.

although i think both my bikes are great, i find my cervelo to be stiffer than my Felt, but i get the same aero benefit.
it's the kind of thing where i feel like i'm holding the bike back, not vice versa.
I'm not sure if i'll get another cervelo for my next bike, but it is no-doubt a very nice bike.
Perhaps you should try re-reading what the question was. 'Marketing' is a perfectly valid answer to 'Why is Brand X popular?'

I guess like any other brands everyone has their opinions. It just happens that one group I know all ride cervelo, and the other week I saw another group all riding cervelo

I see more Giant and Specialized bikes in NYC. Fuji would be next, followed by Trek. Rarely see Cervelos here. I think Trek is so uncool here, and is now bordering on ironic. They should be cool again next year.

The uneducated buy Cervelo because the name sounds cool and exotic . . . unlike:

Trek . . . . . . . (as in Star)
Giant . . . . . . (grocery store)
Felt . . . . . . . (fabric?)
BMC . . . . . . (bowel movement company?)
Wilier . . . . . (can't pronounce it)
Specialized . . (too obvious)
Focus . . . . . (commanding verb)
Cannondale . . (too old)
Canyon . . . . . (who?)
Merckx . . . . . (spelled weird)
Pinarello . . . . (rhymes with Jello)
Giant . . . . . . (freak of nature)
Orbea . . . . . . (what?)

I have one (2008 Soloist Team). It's a great bike. Inertianinja is exactly right: it's incredibly stiff and telepathically quick. Great crit bike.

In my case it was kind of a bargain replacement frame for my beloved crashed Bianchi. Excel Sports was selling dinged frames at a huge discount. The ding on mine was a tiny blemish in the paint on the downtube. I had to search for it.

You see a few around here, but not nearly as popular as Specialized. Can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Tarmac in NorCal.

Great engineering and a little more niche than say Trek or Specialized. They are still far and away a small company, although that is changing. Also, they are very function oriented, and boy that makes me hard. Not to say that there aren't many other manufacturers that I'd love to have a bike from (Wilier, Colnago, Crumpton, Look, Parlee just to start off) but I'd probably always have 1 Cervelo in my stable

"marketing" is the go-to answer for many of the people on this forum when they want to poo-poo a product that they don't have.
"marketing" is referred to as if it is some magic trick that bike companies (except the ones that they buy from) use to fool consumers.
"marketing" implies that the product is not worth its price, which is an unfair comment unless one actually has experience with the product.

if the act of winning stages on a bike is "marketing" then nobody should be complaining about the 'marketing" that any company does.
i mean, do we expect them to cover the names of the bikes?

Nice photo of Phillippe Gilbert in the Specialized ad with the Canyon logo on his jersey.

It's helpful to not only read the response, but to read the post to which the response is directed. So, note that the comment was "What marketing does Cervelo even do?" and I was pointing out that they had a two page ad in Velonews.
Cervelo, along with Trek and Cannondale and Specialized run tv ads on races.
Enjoy.

I got ride of mine. It is amazing how much people are willing to pay for a used, 3 year-old Cervelo Soloist Carbon frame. I, personally, was getting tired of all the marketing hype and my riding budies drooling all over it. I replaced it with an aluminum Spooky and am much happier now - much stiffer bike!
