Riding in the drops comfortably (for me) is more a matter of a saddle that allows forward hip rotation, than bending an old back (luckily, no back/hip injuries, yet). 'In the drops' for me is about saving leg power thru efficient flow - on a faster ride. Breaking the air is the primary force resisting one's forward motion. My leg muscles greatly appreciate aero - on a faster ride; usually a significant 2-3mph level of leg strength appreciation. I am not a tourer and bow to all bicycle set-ups that truly are = racked and ready for the long road.
Short shallow handlebars should be marketed to cycling veterans more aggressively, imho. And narrow really helps for roadies.
But rolling regularly is far more important than rolling efficiently. And while speed thrills, for some = comfort is king.
Alterations are sometimes needed.
excuse the excess loopy housing, I really should reduce the length - since years ago. Haha, not aero. Another incremental improvement pending.

They work well on my old road bike. I’m just running an old 5-speed freewheel and use a friction bar end. They really are preferable in the winter when trying to shift while wearing mittens. OTOH, I may just be going back to only single speed except for the summer months, in which case it’s moot.
