Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Correct Ultegra Chain

I'm about to install an Ultegra CS-R8000 11-32 cassette on a bike that has 52-36 chain rings. Is the CN-HG701-11 with 116 links the correct chain? Apparently there's also a 126 link version available and I want to be sure I have the correct part.

Thanks,
Robert

Count the number of links on your current chain.

It looks like it's a custom setup. He does not seem to currently have a chain.

OP - I have 11x30 cassette & 36/52 chainrings. Not the same specs, but I can get back to you tonight on the # of links on mine.

Chainstay length matters too.

That's my setup as well, and I will count the links.

116 links is a standard length chain. That will easily fit a 52T chainring/32T cog combination on a road bike with normal length chainstays.

That 126 link chain is a specialty item for bikes that don’t have normal road bike proportions.

FWIW, if your old cassette was an 11-28T and you have the shortcage SS derailleur, you might need a GS derailleur to take up all the slack in the small chainring/small cog position.

Mine is a short cage R8000 Ultegra limited to 11-30, which is my current cassette. Though 11-32 is technically out of spec, what kind of compromises are likely?

He was referencing chain wrap for the small/small combo. If both cassettes start with the same 11t cog, the small/small doesn't change.

Yes, but if the chain is a little longer to accommodate the larger rear cog, does it create additional slack in the small/small combo that might be a concern?

Ah. Dunno. The math is easy, though - look up the RD capacity and add the difference between the chainrings to the difference of the largest/smallest cassette cogs. If it's close, I personally wouldn't worry about it - I'm not in the habit of running anywhere near the small/small. If you do find yourself in that combo... for whatever reason... then get the longer cage RD.
