Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nice. What did the C&V guys say about the group on there?

I've thought about changing out the parts on my 1978 Gianni Motta to modern Campy but haven't done it for fear a legion of old Italian Giro racers will come out of their graves and crush my soul.

Oooh - I just remembered that my new saddle should be showing up today. Might have to try a 90-min trainer session this Wed to see if the new saddle keeps my junk from going numb.

That's the "Darth Vader" Dura Ace crank. I disliked mine at first too, but it's grown on me.

I bought a Specialized Power saddle a couple weeks ago, tried it for a couple hundred miles, and ended up selling it (fortunately for exactly what I paid for it). Back to the Toupe for me, even if the shell on mine is getting a bit saggy, although not yet cracked.

The biggest lesson I've learned in my years of cycling is that you're never truly going to be comfortable on a saddle, it's just a matter of finding one that sucks the least.

When I first got my Toupe, the one that I'm riding right now, it was great. Could sit on the trainer for 90 min and not need to shift at all. The shell still seems a-okay, so I'm thinking about what might have changed. The only thing that I can think of is that I might be tilting my hips forward more, or sliding forward and riding the rivet on harder efforts. I can sit up indefinitely without any numbness issues, but that's not exactly a good compromise. I'm going to keep trying. I'm going to hold out hope for a saddle that doesn't cause a tingle in my dingle.

Have you ever tried a Selle Italia Superflow? I demo'd one a few years ago, the shape is pretty close to a Toupe but it has a much larger cutout, may help with the numbness-

No, that's been a saddle of interest, though. We'll see how the Shimano goes, it's got a huge cut-out too, and then try the Selle, if necessary (they carry them at REI and member dividends are around the corner).

BTW, did you ever take a trip up here or did that get pushed back again?

Our clients up there apparently hate us, so we've pushed back organizing an "advisory" (basically just a meeting on market trends) for a few months. At this rate I may make it out there in the summer, which is fine by me.
