Torrington track pedals question
These Torrington #5 track pedals came on the circa 1948 track bike I recently got. I just rebuilt them and cleaned them up and they work great. But I have one question--through the rear side of each pedal is a heavy screw that goes through two lock washers and is bolted on with a square nut. This assembly weighs darn near what the whole pedal weighs otherwise. What is the purpose of these screws? They're not holding anything on. Is it to grab with your toe to flip the pedal so you can get your foot into it? Training weights (j/k, I think)?
The pedals came like this, so I just cleaned the rust off and put things back as I found them.

Sounds reasonable to be a flip thingy. I pull one of the reflectors on my quill pedals to ease onto the 'flat' side. I don't use clips tho. Those pedals almost look modern-very nice!
