Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Once you ride a nice bike, you never realize how true this is. When I attend clinics with the team, I let the folks know that they will never out-ride the bike they have, as long as they ride it properly. Anyone can wreck a bike, but I doubt any of us will ever take one past it's limits. Trust the bike.

For some reason, I imagined this as a little speech, given in front of a small group, and then you singling out someone with, "except you - be careful on that piece of ****."

Makes me lol for some dumb reason.

I've been weirdly nervous after getting so invested in the C&V world to ride a modern bike again. I've put so much time and effort into my Trek getting it to as close to "dream bike" as possible that I don't want to ruin it somehow by throwing a leg over some modern carbon frame Although the Trek just oozes class and sophistication IMO, and you just can't get that exact flavor without skinny steel tubes and lugs. Also, wide-profile cantilevers are just so classically elegant.

That's right. When the BMC goes in tri mode, my watts are wasting its time.

I didn't see anyone else riding yesterday.

None of the drivers of the cars I saw waved back at me

Noticed the same thing. I look sort of hard so I tend to get a nod from the local road types anyway, but now they're waving with a full hand. I tend grin and wave at everyone, but I'm doing it more too. Just stay the **** away!

Ha. Speaking of looks on the bike, some kid with a skate board, maybe 16 years old or so, called out to me when I passed, "I *like* that jacket, man!" He was speaking, of course, about my retina-searing pink Rapha jacket. And yes, he seemed to be genuine.

Cervelo makes a damn fine bike. They sorta lost their way for a while, but their newer ones are getting better. And on the tri side, their bikes below the P5 are crazy fast for not being hard to work on, and handle predictably.

That said, AG’s SystemSix looks amazing (and is somewhat more of a Cervelo than a modern Cervelo).

And fwiw, while you’re Cervelo-curious, I’ve been itching to try an updated steel frame for a while. Unfortunately, I just don’t think I ride enough to justify another.

Oh, and I had a big pickup hang back on a wide, empty, road until they could see a quarter mile ahead before passing and then go entirely into the left lane. Okay, nice enough, but then the passenger shrieked something unintelligible at me as they went by. Weird.

Lifetime warranty for the original owner is nice. After speaking with Cervelo customer service and feeling encouraged by LAJ's carbon repair, I got it fixed for $500 and went a different direction. Best idea ever. The grass isn't always greener.

Now that the geometry seems to be returning to normal, the Rs continue to kick ass. They excel at everything. As WhyFi pointed out, a bit twitchy/responsive at first, but then it's all good. They're more bike than any of us would ever need. We're holding the bike back.
Speaking of wives and new bikes, a couple came in to the shop last week. She was getting service for her bike and he wanted to upgrade his ride. He really liked the carbon Fuji with 105 we had, but wanted to think about it (because it was a little over his budget).

When she came to pick up her repaired bike, she also bought the Fuji for her husband.

Could have been someone who was afraid to pass and got frustrated waiting for that long clear straight. It's weird, but it happens.
