Interesting.

Curious, what's the connection with Alberto Ascari? Maybe I should rephrase and 'is' there a connection? Just guessing here as their website mentions 'synonymous with Formula One auto racing, Ascari Bicycles.....'

doesn't seem to be any connection there, IMO.
the designer's—one of the founders—name seems Helio Ascari.
unless he's a descendant of the family?

some interesting mag article photos on him—mostly in Italian—can also be found at:

Pricey and a bit overdone, I read the French mag info, les nouveau beau mec du monde... or the new beautifull guys ( or hip) of the World, hmmm.

Former Model with a passion for bikes, nice they would be better without all that leather wrap stuff, just my opinion, and " quote" for riding around town, keep the bike close to you, no lock needed...

Interesting. I don't think I've ever seen anything as over the top as some of those. Nice, yes, but too gaudy for my taste.

What can you say other than "Twine?" Maybe,"too much twine", but that would be an understatement.

And I thought my wood fendered Super Course was kinda silly. Those bad boys are WAY over the top on the wood 'n' leather (and wicker? naw, probably not) ornamentation.

All in good fun, I guess; though its somewhat telling that their new distributor in Japan a high-end, faux-vintage clothing boutique, and their NYC distributor is the Ralph Lauren flagship in 5th Ave. Their press section has many fashion mag photos of ruggedly bearded young hunks holding the bike, standing next to the bike, looking at the bike, but not one shot of anyone actually ON the bike.

Horizontally stiff, yet vertically fabulous.

"""Ascari Bicycles offers classically designed, hand-built bicycles. Founded in 2011 by designer Helio Ascari and framebuilder Gary Mathis, Ascari Bicycles fuses a timeless sense of fashion with an equally timeless appreciation for the hand-built bicycle."""

"""As the Ascari name is synonymous with Formula One auto racing, Ascari Bicycles hopes to be as synonymous with the enduring legacies of fashion and cycling."""

"" But it was in his time working in the fashion industry that he developed his style, and where he had the opportunity to introduce a bicycle project to a fashion house that was successfully launched as part of a larger environmental project. """

On the same page, a pic of Helio hunched over a metal lathe -no safety glasses!!! He never picked up that little tidbit of information at all the factories hes worked in!?

If you go to the press section of the website, you'll see that he is indeed a descendant of Alberto Ascari, the Formula 1 great.

Gorgeous work IMHO....

wonderful eye candies. partially inspiring here and there—not their story, but their builds.
brooklyn, hipster, oregon, ... didn't matter to me much. culture, trend, it is what it is.
IMHO, i mean.

and it does seem to be that he is indeed the descendent of the f1 racer Ascari. interesting.

and yes. those bullet valve caps!!! #want

"Male Model turns Bicycle Maker"!

One can easily imagine why most of the press is from fashion mags/blogs.

The actual framebuilder, Gary Mathis, teaches at UBI and has worked for Independent Fabrication (brazer) and Fat City Cycles...so good bones, one would think.

+1 to too much. I like some features here & there, such as the bi-plane fork crown on the mixte custom and some of the parts selections (Curtis Odom hubs make me weak in the knees) but the overall effect is too overwrought, especially all that twine.

I can just imagine some of these bikes 5-10 years from now relegated to hooks as they begin to become unwound. The type of person who would splurge on such a fashion statement may not necessarily be inclined to do their own work, and what LBS would take on a seat tube twine repair?

I think they are fun to look at and examine, in the same way that concept cars are fun to look at an examine, but I'm not at all interested in buying one. Even if they made a more run-of-the-mill machine, they type of bike they are focused on is not my cup of tea. More power to them if they can make a go of it and I hope they find their market, but they'll have to do so without $$$ infusions from me.
