What causes a flickr pic to go viral?

I post a lot to flickr. Almost all of it is bike related. Sometimes I post a photo that I really think will get a lot of action, but it doesn't.

Why this one?

866 views, 18 faves. Most of them aren't even bicycle people. I thought it was just an interesting idea I wanted to share on fixing bent metal fenders.

Because it was chosen for "Explore". You can read how/why pics get chosen for Explore and it will be clear as mud.

This is the type of thing that qualifies as thinking outside the box nowadays, that I really think is common sense by a skilled craftsman, two things in short supply for the masses these days IMHO.

I was going to say "cleavage", rather than "explore"

Sometimes you have to get creative to get something done. I think it's a great idea and photo that appears older than it actually is. I would have liked it.

I've had a couple of photos selected by Flickr for the "Explore" group. This makes it available to a lot of people and some of them will mark it as a favorite and comment on it. Flickr explains the Explore group somewhere... the criteria is not based on aesthetics or appeal. It's just a random photo, but usually chosen from the pics of people who post a lot of stuff to Flickr.

I've had a couple of photos on Explore. One was a rather bland photo of the hangar at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach. Probably not of interest to anyone but some aviation nerds (like me). It still got over 4000 views and 74 "favs".

I suppose it makes as much sense as how the Kardashians got famous, though.

Probably due to your use of the word "bung". :-)

That's it! Perhaps additional points were from the "pound the bung in" statement...

Kudos on your creative fender straightener idea, by the way. I do a lot of things with hole saw and wood blocks but yours was a bit different.

Before anyone's imagination runs too far afield: I build racing powerboats from wood and fiberglass - lots of creative uses for hole saws.

I also make metal hardware parts for those boats. One of my ongoing projects required 8000 pieces, discs 1-1/2" diameter by 1/8" thick from 6061 aluminum. I made them using an industrial-grade hole saw on a drill press. The object was not the hole, but the cutout (what you called the bung). I've also found that an $8 wood-boring (bi-metal) hole saw is also capable of making good clean holes in aluminum up to 1/4" thick if done carefully.
