I just put a deposit on a Brompton that I should get this weekend. I remember talking to an owner about helicopter tape and he had either purchased some pre-cut tape or got some instruction about areas to cover.

I would like to put some helicopter tape on before I put on too many miles. Can anyone advise?
1) where to get a pre cut tape package
2) where to find the advice/instructions about where to apply the tape (and the size roll to purchase).

I do remember he said there were some surprising contact areas.

There was a tape carried on the Huey's in Viet Nam War, cover bullet holes.. you mean that stuff..?

It is an aluminum foil-adhesive combination ..

I bought some 1" wide helicopter tape from Amazon; high quality but rather expensive stuff. I only used it around the bar contacted by the front wheel plastic leg hook. I should probably put a new piece on as it's looking a little chewed up. Some people also wrap tape around the bar areas that touch the cables but I didn't bother.

You don't need pre-cut. Just get the smallest quantity you can find unless you plan to wrap your entire bike.

[Less OCD) I just used a section of inner tube and regular electric tape on the chainstay tube , myself ..

there is a spot on the left fork blade your front brake cable may wear on the paint,
put a little touch Up paint (any color, I had silver only a Match head sized spot) on, when the steel shows..

With great expense come great OCD.

But Seriously. If it's new and I can protect it before having to do touch up...why not? That's one task instead of multiple tasks.

PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a short strip of tape if you just want to cover the plastic hook area and possibly the cables.

Residuenyc. Thanks for offer. I ordered some tape and applied it generously. I also installed a Bromfoot 2 for extra measure.

My 3 Bromptons has chips in all the usual places - notably where the hinges/clamps meet. First thing I always do is paste clear helicopter tape on the frame/stem/triangle where the cables are likely to rub against.

I certainly don't mistreat my Bromptons but unless you're ridiculously (to the point of paranoia) careful and knowledgeable, amassing chips and scratches are unavoidable in my experience. Call them "battle scars" or "adding character" if it makes you feel better.
