Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey Velo Vol if you want the Saturn of watches, get a Casio F-91W. It works great, made of lightweight plastic, and VERY inexpensive. That's my timepiece of choice.

Uff da. For the fake non-miles this morning, I lowered my interval targets by 20w across the board, knowing that I've lost a step since late fall... It was still more work than it should have been.

I like the aesthetic of many vintage watches, but I'm too lazy and risk averse to buy them - I don't want to to over-pay, but have no interest in researching fair prices, and I fear getting one that'll need some work and raising the effective cost of the piece. That in mind, I think that it's cool that many manufacturers are revisiting their designs of yesteryear and bringing some of that aesthetic back to market in to slightly more generous case sizes and with modern internals.

But, of course, I can't be spending money on watches - I've bike crap and work shop crap that still need to sink money in to.

Do you have a lot of different classes & types to keep track of?

I hear grumbles that some of the other majors want every hour in every tail number ever flown. My short airline career that would prolly be close to 70 different airplanes. Add all the others in my pre airline career were looking at like 120. My slow typing skills and need to move around would make this an extremely long endeavor.

That seems excessive.

A 172 is a 172, right?

Same as a 737 Max is a 737

Wore my new shoes with new cleats this morning. In my ways of the noob, I didn’t pay attention to my cleat position on my old shoes. My old shoes were so used any abused I thought the cleats only went up and down I didn’t realize they went side to side as well. My cleats were not in a favorable position this morning. The crazy thing was how much pressure it caused in my left hand. Lily wants to ride tonight so I am going to play around with it then.

My new cleats are extremely hard to unclip. Pedals are shimano SL and the cleats are Shimano SL cleats. Anything I can do to make this a little easier?

Well you have full glass g 1000 172, or all steam gauges. Our dash 8 fleet, half were steam gauges the other half was glass.

But yes I agree with you.

My buddy just finished his 737 max difference training. He doesn’t seem worried, and if my company told me I would start flying that next week, then that’s what I would be flying next week.

Since my dad gave it to me, I have not worn it and have not been in a hurry to get a strap. Will do so one day, but for now it's safely stored in my watch case. I do wind it about once a month. Any suggestions on where to get a crystal for it?

Since I am not a yute like VV, I wear a watch virtually every day. But, I prefer the 42mm case size and stainless/titanium case materials.

Prompted by the 'sunglasses' thread, I checked out some glasses online and was reminded of an increasingly common online practice that I find obnoxious - pop-ups that put simpleton words in your mouth via the decline button.

Things like "No - I'm not interested in great deals" or "No, I don't want to be kept up to date on world news." These are usually enough to just make me close the tab altogether and find a different site.

Have you taken the pedal tension?

I'm sure you know how, but if you don't -

They often have tension adjustments on the pedal but, even at their lowest setting, SPD-SL tend to have higher retention force than SPD. They'll also get a little easier after a bit of a break-in period.

I feel naked without a wrist watch. So much more convenient than pulling out my phone.

My daily driver isn't anything special on the surface, just a Timex Weekender Chrono, but it was a gift from my then-girlfriend-now-wife on our first Christmas together. It's size and overall aesthetic is exactly right for me and I've worn it pretty much every day since she gave it to me

I don't understand these massive watch cases, the biggest I wear is a Casio MDV106 dive watch and the case size and overall weight get annoying after a while. It's not even a big watch by most standards

I was gunna go with a generic cleat but the guy at contes said the ones I picked out had zero float, which didn’t sound pleasant so I went with the shimano.
I had all the bolts tight, it was so hard to get my left foot unclipped one of the bolts went flying off and disappeared on me.

Did you get the yellow cleats? They have the most float and are pretty popular.

One thing to check - snug your shoes up really snug, but not so tight that it's uncomfortable. If the shoe is loose, your foot will slide inside the shoe when you try to twist to release. Make sure the shoe moves with your foot.

On my bike, I have the pedal tension as loose as it will go, and sometimes still have some difficulty releasing, especially on the right. I'm a left foot first kinda guy.

My most regularly worn watch is a 42mm diver with titanium case and bracelet. The thing is really light. But, I agree, a large stainless case and bracelet can get weighty.
