Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Did I mention that I sold the Tcr I had for sale yesterday? Going to buy a kicker core tonight! Then resell the snap. This stuff just pays for itself!

And then, if there was any area where the grass clippings were heavy enough to lay on top of the cut grass, I was supposed to rake that up and put it in the compost. If string trimmers had been invented, he'd have wanted me to do that, too.

Life lesson for all of us - hire a service when you grow up.

Remember those hand trimmers that looked like a pair of heavy duty scissors? Hated those things, especially when we had to edge the drive and sidewalk with them. Thank goodness for power tools these days.

Oh, I dunno. Damn thing lasted forever, or at least it seemed to. Dad probably bought it in 1963 and it was used weekly throughout spring, summer, and fall to mow 1 3/4 acres for at least 10 years. It's possible that the early 60s was about the end of their reign, though, and they were replaced by riding mowers and later lawn tractors. In fact, Dad eventually bought a riding attachment for this one that would give the current Consumer Product Safety Commission the screaming heebie-jeebies, because it would have been easy to stick your toes into the whirling blades. Plus it steered tiller-style, so if you fell off it might run right back over you. Happened to a college friend of mine when he was a yute and he lost a hand.

IIRC, Dad used a straight-edged spade shovel for edging driveways. But he didn't do it more than, maybe once, because the house has a LONG driveway and a LONG sidewalk in front.

Wheels came! Little damage to the outside of the box but the wheels were secured inside. Wife pulled them out and checked them, didn’t see any damage. Can’t wait to get home tomorrow.

Alternative life lesson: Don't buy a house with a big yard. BUT Dad spent 50 years, from when he bought the house at 43 years old till he couldn't really garden anymore at 93, making that yard into a place that, to this day, any of us will simply sit and look out on, for long periods.

I have those now. They're not so bad if you don't have too much to do with them. Working overhead is tiring, for sure.

All I remember is that cutting a clean edge along the drive and walk when the grass was growing over the edge by about 5 or 6 inches was a big pita.

That's a really nice yard.

We only have about 100 square feet of grass in our backyard. The pool and patio cover most of it. But, we have a ton of shrub beds, and that gets to be a lot of work to maintain, especially with the grasses and shrubs that spread through underground runners.

These would be grand fathered in under the “only for me” clause. She didn’t have a bike when these were ordered.

We had the thing that looked like a small wheel with a throwing star attached to it mounted on the end of a stick. Worthless.

My first interest was in voyaging. I had even picked out a beautiful Hereshoff 36' ketch I was going to build myself. That plan got sidetracked as I began to build boats for a living that ranged from multihulls to IOR type custom race boats. In there somewhere I moved to Newport, building custom race boats including aluminum 12 meter America's Cup boats about 1980 or so. Also in there I sailed in the Singlehanded Trans-Atlantic race from Plymouth, England to Newport and a number of voyages to Bermuda and the Caribbean. I never kept track but total offshore miles was about 15,000. These days 16 y.o. kids are sailing around the world. I'm an old man now and don't sail much anymore unless a sailing friend takes pity on me. Last year one of my sailing friends took me out in a 16' trailerable boat to watch the start of the Classic Yacht Regatta. Racing that day was Dorade an S&S design from the 1930s. The boat has been beautifully maintained and still, in this era of very high speed boats, has more presence than anything else in the harbor. I live in Bristol now, about 12 miles north of Newport but Newport is a very fun town for younger sailors. There are quite a few 12 meter boats there and a few J boats. Those older designs have presence and class.
