Ironically, kids might be the only weight rider that would not buckle this frame.

"Mint" condition, if you can excuse the obvious signs it's been abandoned to the elements for a few seasons.
And only $200 over it's original retail price too! It's a pandemic bargain

- Is that an oversized head tube on a 1970's bike?

- The saddle? Are those rivets or snap on buttons for the saddle cover over a molded shell?
Most cheapo (department store; Murray, Huffy, etc.) bikes of the era used 26x1/38 wheels. And don't call those things "road bikes." It's an insult to roads.

I recently salvaged some van seats with swivels from a '70s conversion van for my own camper build and the color scheme matches that bike perfectly.

Not an oversized head tube; undersized other tubes. Honest.

Rivets. It's a typical mattress saddle, standard cheapo "comfort" seat from the era.

I actually had one of these in the 70s and 26" wheels were the common wheel of department store bikes. And as far as rare, there were so many of these Santa Fe bikes I actually see them come up for sale quite often. That saddle isn't original though. I paid more for one of my Takaras because I had one of them too when I was a kid. But not to the extent this would be an overpayment. The only nostalgic response these things trigger in me is riding it made me interested enough in bikes I found a book in the school library that talked about lugged frames, three piece cranks and high flange hubs that made me ditch the Santa Fe.

I wonder what the story is behind this. He was trying to make two unicycles. He heard a rumor that a million dollars was hidden in the tube? There appears to be a chunk of the top tube missing too. The dog at the bottom of the picture looks perplexed as well.

Yeah. I have a lot of questions.

They do appear to be very well done, clean cuts. So I'll give 'em that.

Is that wood sticking out of the bottom half of the downtube? Did he try cutting it for some reason (to make it smaller?) and then try to brace it by putting a 2x2 in the downtube and then screwing both halves to the 2x2 in hopes of getting it to stick back together?

I think it is, but I have no idea why it's there.

My working theory is that someone cut a U-lock off the frame. But even that leaves... a lot of questions.

I'd see this often at stores. Damaged product would be rendered unusable and thrown in the trash to prevent resale.

Probably the most plausible explanation. Somebody went dumpster diving behind the store?
