Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tax rates must be the same there as they are here. Plugged that number in to an estimator for Rockford and got $5k as well.

That's pretty high IMO but I am sure tax rates are all over the place and may also be higher if state income taxes are lower, etc.

One more data point: Our 4BR3BA 2400 square foot home on 1 acre in a really good school district has taxes of about $5500/year, that's school tax plus township tax plus county tax.

I'm looking forward to doing some more adventurous rides on it. Previously my only navigation aids were a cue sheet and odometer. That meant routes in unknown areas had to be done on the Trek where there was a good area for the cue sheet to live and a calibrated-ish odometer - I still had to stop occasionally and look at my phone but not too often. Now I've got a Wahoo so it will be easier to go explore
I need to do that more this year, too. If I weren't such a procrastinator, I'd start laying out some prospective routes and confirming suitability with StreetView...

Our property tax shows more than 2/3 going to our school district. That's all I have to say on that.

Same here. Maybe it's because my two daughters went through our public schools K-12 that I don't mind paying it.

Ahh - I see that this is a Euro regulation thing. Cool. Looks like my new-ish Yokohamas aren't even all weather - they're all-season. Huh. Still pretty good on the snow and ice, though, but I'll remember this for the next time.

Yah it’s a European thing. It took me a long time to convince the dealer there was a difference.

A 100 mile ride justifies two bottles, even in the Actual North "summer."

Reminds me: at the shoppe the guy removed my broken water bottle cage. So I currently have one. Am I bullish enough on my long-distance ridding prospects that I should get a second one?

When I lived there, we locals always avoided it when we could, especially in the summer when tourists flock there. Nowadays, when I go back for visits, I like to go through the Square. But not in the middle of the day!

Y'all realize that we have 50 states and no two of them use the same taxing formulas or even have comparable types of taxes.. You have to balance RE taxes with state and local gas taxes, personal property, license plates, vehicle title fees, state and local sales tax, and a myriad of other taxes, both state and local. I worked with highway taxes in Illinois and their distribution and I assure you that virtually no resident has the faintest idea of where they are being taxed, how they are being taxed, about hidden taxes, etc. but they all know their RE tax is the highest in the country and someone should do something about it.

Ahh. We have taxes and fees on our auto registration to handle much of that too.

Yes. And in some states, their fees (taxes) are much higher than other states. That's my point. When deciding where to live, RE tax is just one piece of the pie. Take income taxes for example. Some states have them and some don't. Sales tax varies widely across the country and that's a tax we all pay daily. I chuckle when people talk about taxes like they really know where and how much they are paying.

Agree. This ranking may be a good start, but of course there are more pieces to the puzzle that are not being counted.

My state of PA is exactly in the middle.

Home now is valued much higher than what I was looking at, it just broke 3k this last winter tax. I was pissed about it when that happened too. These are local taxes. The state has sales tax and income tax.
I was hoping to get out of this place and into something I could own outright before the bubble pops again. This place needs to much work for that to happen quickly.
