That moment when you're riding a long and feeling good and then...

… you are coming up quickly behind a Slow Poke. On the "wrong" bike and wearing the "wrong" cloths to be going fast. You're not going all that fast yourself, but faster than he is. You feel good. You're in the zone. Inside you're head though is every Bike Snob post where he rips the so-called cat-5 racers. You're not that guy. You don't want to be That Guy but you feel good. You're spinning. You just can't actually GO as slow as this dude though so you pull up next to him, chit and chat and spin away, taking the lead in the non-race race. For a while. Then the "good" that you were feeling is replaced by "dog but" and you look over your shoulder. You keep looking over your shoulder. How close s that guy? Is he gaining on you? Eventually you cave to the stress and pull over at the side of the road to "Watch the birds" still he peddles by….

I never pay any attention to, or give it any merit if I pass someone or if someone passes me..

For all I know they might be on mile 56 and just did 3,000 feet of climbing all the while I am at mile 4.. Or vise versa..

I was happily doing the 20-something mile loop around Georgia's Jekyll Island on my touring bike. It was early Tuesday morning and I had the place, I thought, to myself, so I was humming along on the trail over the dunes and in and out of the woods and bang! over the bridges. Pure joy. Then I zoomed around a curve and encountered two elderly tourists on their rental tourist bikes. They were doing about three miles per hour, and I had to slam on the brakes to avoid plowing into them.
What ensued was a study in southern courtesy.

"Oh, YOU go ahead. We'll stop and let you by."

"No, you two keep going. I'll just follow you for a ways. There's an opening up ahead."

"We don't MIND stopping. You're obviously much faster than us."

"Oh, NO. I'm here to enjoy the scenery, too. I'm not in a hurry.

"If you say so. By the way, where are you from?"

I ended up knowing their names, their kid's names and occupations, and learned about hip dysplasia in "police dogs."

And THEN we had to determine if we had any distant relatives.

About thirty minutes later I bid them farewell.

Just in time for the rain to start. It rained on me all the fifty miles home (in my truck).

So technically, I AM faster than some people.

I had a dream one time about having a dream (so weird) that I was able to finish last in a race put on by a local bike shop.
