If his docs are convinced he had properly adjusted his bike, didn't have totally сrap technique, and wasn't suffering from a preexisting condition, it is clear that he wasn't riding enough.
20 miles per day isn't much. Many people on BF have been riding much more than that for a long time.

I'm a nursing student and today I talked to a man who was in a lot of pain after requiring a total hip replacement on his right side. I asked him what was the cause and he told me it was biking. He flew in from a small town in Nevada (no surgeons there) and biked about 20 miles a day. He said the biking motion wore down on his hip area until there was nothing left and now he can barely walk.
Scary stuff. Has anyone else known of or dealt with this problem?

I see it all so clear now… he just wants me to destroy the Right hip now, so he can replace it too. That greedy money hungry…
Starting to ride a bike again has been one of the best things I've done in my life in a long time. I hope it will slow down the problems with my right hip.
Edit: Most of this post was sarcasm by the way… I have no intentions of giving up my riding.

My grandmother smoked and drank, didn't exercise, and ate lots of fried food. She lived to 93. Should I infer from this that if we all do the same we will all live longer?
I think it's fair to say that you are looking at a pretty small sample size (of one, to be precise); so I wouldn't concern yourself about your hips disintegrating whilst riding.

However, you should be concerned about your mind letting go. I'm sure there is a physiological reason so many of us become schwagaholics...

Very true. If you DO ever need a hip replacement you won't be able to afford it as you'll choose to spend the money to shave 13g off your seatpost.

I live in Canada... hips are free here so I will still have enough money for schwag which is good because bad hips run in the family.
My grandfather had 5 hip replacement surgeries and none of these slowed him down... this is why after 1 and 2 he needed 3, 4, and 5. In his eighties he could still dead lift and carry 500 pounds up a set of stairs... and did.
My uncle is in his sixties and has had both his hips replaced...he is the spitting image of my grandfather (his dad) and his sister and my aunt has also had both her hips replaced.
I hope I take after my maternal grandfather...he was still living on his own and taking care of a few acres of garden when he was in his late nineties, had no joint problems, no heart problems, and was sharp as a tack.
He lived to be 100 which actually made him short lived compared to his sisters who lived to 110, 105, and 107.

OP you left out alot of important info. "A man" covers alot of ground. How old, physical health, on and on. If this man just rode any bike even one with a crummy position 20 miles a day I doubt it would cause a hip replacment.
Now I had a job one summer in college, making shoes. My job for 8 hours a day was to pull part of the shoe over the last and staple the leather to the inner sole. Had I done that for 20 years I would have needed to replace something but I would have a right forearm like Popeye.

If he had not been riding, he would probably have needed a new hip years ago.

I've enjoyed the last 42 years here and expect the next 42 to be even better.
Perhaps I'll find that hot stoker for the tandem by then.

Don't mince words
Secondly, that's a medical opinion, not fact. It cannot be proven.
Keep riding, or jogging, and just be smart. Warm up and cool down and stretch and breathe.

Did you actually complete above said education?

You have much to learn, young RN.
Everyone that has ever eaten a pickle has either died or will die. Better stop eating pickles.

Is he of Scandinavian decent? I have a friend who had both hips replaced at 35. The hip sockets just wore out. He told me the doctor said it was hereditary. He said it is rare but seen in people from Wisconsin to Idaho. He does not ride bicycles.
