Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Experiment: Wussy w/ a powertap.

I got my powertap wheel last week, played with it over the weekend (including accidently clearing the data after a great group ride on Saturday - I'll never do that again!), just getting a feel for things. Today, I decided to do a MAP test, so I can finally set my training zones.

Finally, confirmation that I suck!

I started low, at 75w, anticipating my wussy-dom. Increase 5w every 12seconds. I had a really tough time keeping my output steady, but it is what it is. MAP of 282 gives me an FTP of 211 (2.81w/kg). I'm kinda happy with that actually - my Self Loathing was preparing for it to be under 200w.

The good news is, I think I have a LOT of room for improvement! This is gonna be fun

Remember: For everyone on these forums that puts out 300 watts in a crit or TT, there's someone else who does a recovery ride at 400. It's all relative.

``looks like what my power profile would''

Same here. 8)

Ok. I'd like to know who does recovery rides at 400w. Since that is what armstrong did for an hour at a TDF time trial. This person should be winning tours left and right.

Don't worry Pcad - respect where it's due. I can only hope to one day reach your level of Self Loathing!

I joined the ranks of the Wussy with a PT too. I got a wheel built last week with it and just mounted it to a new frame today as my bike was just finished. Have not even turned the head unit on, but rode the bike for a couple of long blocks to test it out. Don't know what to tell you so far other than it is a hub. We'll see when I turn on the other yellow thing that came with it.

I am a bit over 600 miles on mine....I do like the data...have not seen enough to really tell what is going on but I am getting closer...I had a trainer give me a few training plans. I feel better now than when I started, I am riding better but it could just be the miles I am not sure.

So if I am looking at PowerAgent...what is a number I can tell you that will give you and idea where I am at? I have 10 rides in it from 20 to 100 miles. Most in the 20 to 30 mile range...1 century and a few in the 60 to 70 range...

Don't forget mon petit cliche, that it is not Pcad who is getting shelled this season. 8 races, 0.0 shellings to date, that's in the Masters 35+, not the 5's. We actually caught the 3/4 field (the race that started ahead of us) last Sunday. I even managed to help the team in the last race. And some them have been fast. Actually those latest Prospect races have been longer @ 40-45 miles too.

You're also not rockin' a 21+ lb steelie

I got shelled in a 4/5 race, where I just felt like crud from the start. Came 3rd the next day.

I've done decently other than that and heck, this is my first season racing and I've only been riding for a year. You've probably put in more miles in a 2-3 month period than I have since I started riding.

I'll take you out for a beer after I turn 21, you old grouch you

From what I've read, no normal ride data is sufficient to set training zones from, if that's what you mean. Grab the Allen & Coggan book if you don't have it, or at least do a search on FTP tests, MAP tests, etc. I've learned a lot (I think) just from following the Training Status?? thread in the racing forum.
