Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's a 1997 Lemond Alpe d'Huez worth?

I've been biking (light commuting, single speed, mountain) for some time now, and just started getting into road biking. At the moment, I'm riding an old "boom bike" 10 speed and looking to upgrade just a little to test the water before I go out and drop

A guy on craigslist is selling a 97' Lemond that is completely stock (they came with the Campy 8 Speed mirage Groupset) with a wireless computer and Time Equipe road pedals/cleats.

He want's $495 for it - and my instincts tell me that's too much for a decade+ old steel road bike.

So roadie masters... what would you pay for this? I was thinking of offerering around $350 or so for it. Am I off my rocker?

I figured. I just ride a rather small 52cm and it seems almost everyone around here is 56+. I've been watching for a decent used ride now for a week and this is the only one that's come up even close to my size.

i think $300 is a fair price-if it is in pristine condition.

495 is definitely too high. Keep in mind that most who cycle are cheap by nature and this guy is obviously still thinking about the $$ he feels he sunk into it at the time.

Mirage is pretty low end Campy. 8spd - while fine - has been pretty well eclipsed. Who cares about a wireless computer. If he thinks it has value tell him to keep it. Time equipe pedals were really nice in their day. I would not place them on my top 5 list today.

$200 could be viewed as an insult, but it is probably an accurately valued offer. $275 wouldn't be out of the question.

You are right at the sweet spot for price. I would set aside another few hundred and pick up a brand new Trek 1000 or similar at a LBS. You get warranty, helpful staff, new gear, etc.

There is a sticky for the sub $800 bike. I know that some Trek dealers do a pretty good sale during the TDF.

Wow, that's pretty funny. I just sold my old '97 LeMond Alpe d'Huez a couple of weeks ago for $200. Might have been able to get a little more for it, but felt it was a reasonable price and cleared a little space in the garage. Loved the Campy, by the way. Even if it was Mirage, it worked great and never gave me a problem.

That bike has been languishing on CL for over a month. Guy even dropped it to $485 for a day before going back up to $495! It might be pristine, but it's still 10 years old.

Just be patient, over 100 listings come up every day.

And to boot, he's kind of a prick. I told him I'm interested if he's willing to work on the price. I got back

"aint gonna happen".

Well.... okay. Your loss I suppose.
