Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh noes! Not a fred!!!

Please do not call me a Fred, it would cut me to the quick! (And it might cause some folk here to dial it up to 400 watts around me).
Here let me shed my valve caps and buy some color coordinated spandex so you will think more of me!!!

By the way, you do know that some folk ride when there are no groups around... don't you?

I am going crazy trying to hear anything over the wind noise
Not to interrupt this thread with what the OP was asking about or anything, but I like the Koss Sparkplug Earphones. The foam rubber seals around your ear, wind noise is mitigated, they are comfortable, tend to stay in, are unobtrusive, and they are cheap.

No one in 5 pages has advocated using headphones while on a group ride. If you dont have the skills to comprehend the language, you shouldnt try arguing on the internet.

Ok I'm assuming from this comment, that you're willing to grant that it would be a bad idea to wear headphones in a group ride.

Yet by making that concession, you defeat your entire proposition, i.e. that its safe to ride in traffic with headphones. If you're sufficiently aware of your surroundings to make it safe to ride among automobiles, then certainly you're sufficeintly aware to ride among other bikes.

Thus the recognition that it would be unreasonable to ride around two wheeled vehicles with headphones, clearly indicates it would be unreasonalbe to ride among 2 ton 4 wheeled vehicles.

And as a side note, I make a fair living doing nothing but manipulating the english language.

I can't stand earbuds. IF I was so music-addicted that I wanted to spoil a good ride with a buncha mp3's, I'd go with something like the Koss KSC 75, which are actually supposed to sound pretty good.

You can even do the "one-ear-thing" if you want - and if it doesn't drive you batty.

Aren't group rides for making casual conversation while riding at or near your LT and pretending not to breathe hard?

Headphones would take all the fun out of that.

there are idiots and freds who like to wear mp3s when they ride on group or organized rides. if there's a crash, i hope they the ones who are hurt. really.

but i digress, since that's not the question that the OP asked.

btw, fwiw - i've been known to pop in my iPod buds during my solo winter rides.

I guess I am one of those idiots, although I assume you mean "mp3 players" as it would be a bit difficult actually wear a digital audio file. That being said, I think this whole conversation is ridiculous. It is clear that some people enjoy having music while they ride and some think it is unsafe, while others go as far as to hope that those who do should be injured (you're a fool.) Personally, I like to listen to music while riding, running, even skiing (bring on the chastising.) I listen to my music with both headphones on at a reasonable volume while on my 15 mile commute on busy roads every morning and have never even been close to having an incident because of that. I also have listened to music on organized rides, though then I do opt to use just one earphone. My point is that it is a matter of personal prefference. If you don't think that you can ride safely while listening to music, then don't. But don't insult someones intelligence or accuse them of not being good enough riders, or suggest that they don't enjoy cycling just because they like some background music. Do your own thing and let others do theres.

So, to the original question...I find it very hard to find earbuds that stay in my ears when I am riding hard and/or sweating a lot. If you have problems finding earbuds that fit, I would suggest some of the wrap-around models like sony or koss. I personally find those uncomfortable as well. Right now I am using the earbuds that were included with my samsung k5 player. If you can find a pair sold seperately, I would give them a shot. They fit snug and let have great sound quality, but also let you hear your surroundings provided that you listen at a safe volume.

Cheers all.

After this thread I'll be going on a large, fast group ride soon - and I will specifically CRANK the iPod.

Somehow I get the feeling there will be no incidents. There never have been. For seventeen years.

Earbuds (earphones), clip one earbud off. i.e. sound in one ear only.

Not wearing headphones on a group ride has zero to do with it lowering your awareness. Its all to do with carrying on a conversation with someone while your riding.

As a side note, i make a great living by thinking with my brain. I suggest you not leave your day job to try mine.

My dad can beat up your dad. With his headphones on.

Congrats on your ability to think. We're impressed.

The #1 reason to wear headphones on a group ride is so that you don't have to listen to the bike weenie static. Rest assured that if you YELL at me, I'll hear you.

But I'm not sure I'll listen.

Jarey,
In your posts in this thread you make reference to what your Mom thinks of your riding. Let us know what you become when you grow up.

Uhhhm.... cars don't drive 3 inches from my wheel or 12 inches to the the left or right.

LOL - that's one of the lamest comments I've read here.

why do you insist on hijacking every iPod/headphone thread with your ignorant spewings?

I use sony earbuds under a skullcap that goes over my ears. It's perfect:
