So I picked up a double legged pletscher kickstand for my touring setup. Want to be able to hold the bike upright especially while loaded, so my gear and cargo doesn't get damaged and also to make it easier to get at. It included two black chainstay protector things for bikes without a build in mounting bracket. But this only goes on the top, what about the bottom? Is there any concern of damaging the chainstays on the underside? Can I pad it with something like neoprene or rubber? Or not worry about it.

the real best plan .. take out the BB put some corks in the chainstay tubes and fill the space where the KS will squeeze with like epoxy putty
then the tube wont crush.. other than that use glue and a sheet of rubber,, and glue the rubber to the frame and KS
to the rubber , it will want to rotate .. towards the spokes is not good..

You dont have to leave the legs as is full length , But I see many do. they are marked matching BB Height..

the weight on the legs will have them spread out, some, so dont cut too short ..

they the swiss company make replaceable rubber Feet to go on the ends to not scratch mark floors

they also make a plate for the frame .. it is held on by the bolt that holds the tip of the rear mudguard on, but it is not universal ..

If you don't protect the bottom it will scratch the paint. I have used cloth handlebar tape wrapped around the chainstays and then installed the kickstand. You could also use a cut up inner tube if you want to go that far.

Be careful when torquing down the bolt as you can crush the chainstays and this is why companies such as Surly do not recommend kickstands on their bikes. Link can be found here.

I have used this kickstand on all my bikes and my latest has a kickstand plate which really helps. It is a great kickstand.

That's interesting there @fietsbob I'd not have thought about filling the tubes with epoxy. I've never pulled a BB but will have to learn sooner or later. I believe I have all the tools I need.

As for the cutting yes I am aware and I have the rubber feet as well.

I just don't understand why they would go through the trouble of including the molded pieces for on top but offer nothing for the bottom.

Has anyone had a kickstand plate added to their bike? Welded or brazed on? Is there much danger of damaging or weakening the tubing with a weld?

... But other touring bike Companies * Include a KS plate.. it functions as a chainstay bridge even with out the buyer wanting to fit KS..

* Even those produced in the same MaxWay factory QBP/Surly has making their bikes..

Not twin leg but , new method of KS design puts it on the left rear chainstay , near the dropout.

Mounted with 2 small bolts ..
